On political endorsement wapo.st/3YmeD3T This is cowardice, with democracy as its casualty. @realdonaldtrump will see this as an invitation to further intimidate owner @jeffbezos (and others). Disturbing spinelessness at an institution famed for courage.

🧵Today marks 53 years since the @nytimes started publishing the Pentagon Papers – the 7,000 page top-secret study detailing decades of official lies about the Vietnam War It was, of course, given to the newspaper by the legendary whistleblower and FPF co-founder @DanielEllsberg

We welcome last week's @UN Resolution on the Srebrenica Genocide and condemn the Bosnian govt's subsequent harassment of the local civil society leaders who supported it. The govt’s summoning of @suljagicemir1 and @ReufBajrovic is a clear intimidation tactic to discourage activists and citizens alike from speaking out against injustice.
Balkan Insight@BalkanInsight

The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday adopted a resolution establishing an annual International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide on July 11, despite a campaign by Serbia and its allies against the resolution. Read more: balkaninsight.com/2024/05/23/un-…

Evan Gershkovich, our dear friend falsely accused by Russia of spying, had his pre-trial detention extended by three months today. Friday will mark the first anniversary of Evan's arrest which he has spent in the notorious Lefortovo jail. It's sickening. Free Evan

Russia's non-election was Putin's messaging exercise, designed to show Russians, and the rest of the world, that he intends to stay in power, illegally. No point in pretending it was anything else. theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…

It’s easy to treat the media as a punching bag. But look to the nation’s local newsrooms. For little money or recognition, reporters in 2023 stood up to power brokers who tried to bully them into silence, exposed corrupt officials and even saved lives. Proof, from every state:

We echo @EFJEUROPE’s warning that media freedom in Bosnia & Herzegovina is under threat. Two new legal initiatives in the Republika Srpska (RS) entity, coming in the wake of the recent recriminalization of defamation, are jeopardizing journalists' vital democratic roles. (A 🧵)
