Today is the anniversary of the 1864 #SandCreek Massacre. Cheyenne and Arapaho people, many of them women children & elders, were murdered and mutilated by white soldiers.
Col. Chivington told the soldiers to "Kill 'em all, big and small, nits make lice." nativenewsonline.net/currents/novem…

@MaDR86 @VignonMarcel @StuartJRitchie Try 'dog'. Did you talk yourself through 'animal, four legged, tail, etc, or did you have a mental picture pop up that you clarified by concentration?
(I personally am weird in that there are words I can visualize as written, but cannot pronounce... hyperlexia at work.)
English

I see your point but disagree. Instead of taking the word “strength” take an object such as the dodecahedron. Now tell me, honestly, did you see the shape or talk to yourself a bit (e.g., “Alright, it has twelve sides.”). Repeat this exercise with random shapes, faces, etc. and you’ll be surprised by all the covert verbal behavior you’re using.
English

My hot take: this isn't real. Nobody can actually "see" stuff that doesn't exist in the way implied here unless they're actively hallucinating. This is just an issue of these things being extremely hard to explain using language, and people using words in subtly different ways.

It's baffling to me that some of y'all see stuff in your mind. You SEE it? The way your eyes see? I always thought "visualize" meant thinking of the words/ideas/feelings associated with a thing, not actual visuals. I am such a total 5 on this scale I didn't know 1-4 existed.

@CoullJordan @AmyP5280 @LindaLeeKing @CnickelsonHp @ChrisMurphyCT I mean, we're throwing 1.7 trillion into the F-35, but 63% of Americans are still pro-aid to Ukraine.

@Notsafes_dad @UrsulaV I had read Over Sea, Under Stone, but stumbled across Silver on the Tree & didn't know it was connected. Silver on the Tree, Charmed Life, and Tanith Lee's The Dragon Hoard; The Book of Three, and a bit later, Dragonsinger & Dragonsong.

Both Watership Down and The Hero & The Crown when I was eight or nine. Those two just blew my brain wide open.

Got a question for y’all, what do you think is the most formative piece of media you’ve ever experienced? That one story which shaped your taste in stories from that point onwards.

@hounsh1 @nickeliferous @RBReich @gamesounds Food, housing, transportation, utilities, schooling: even WSJ couldn't come up with 'needs' even in NYC that topped a million/year, and that was living quite cosily. What is a need vs. a want? I refer you to Maslow.
English

@jenneheise @nickeliferous @RBReich @gamesounds Ok. How does it get determined how much someone needs? If I asked a thousand people across the country how much they need I’d get a thousand different, subjective answers.
English

@hounsh1 @charro_principe @Walkerm211 @RBReich @gamesounds The CEOs are, by definition, making more money than they can use, let alone more than they need. The workers are struggling to afford housing.
English

@charro_principe @Walkerm211 @RBReich @gamesounds Who determines what is fair and what isn’t fair? I’m sure CEOs think the amount of money they make is fair compensation. Yet you call it greed.
English

@hounsh1 @nickeliferous @Walkerm211 @RBReich @gamesounds Greed specifically involves both selfishness and wanting more than you need. That's the difference.
English

@nickeliferous @Walkerm211 @RBReich @gamesounds I’m just referring to the definition of greed. The base definition. Without your interpretation. Wanting more for yourself is greedy. Where does “enough” come into this discussion? Different people have different financial needs. Enough for one isn’t enough for another FYI.

@stanman369 @JoJoFromJerz Well, that does seem to be what the Republicans are trying to do.
English

@MooreishM @pdkmitchell People can be upset about vandalism and murder too, you know.
English

@pdkmitchell I was thinking that too. A young girl was murdered yesterday, but watch the drama over a chopped tree. Albeit a beautiful tree. How did awful loss of human life become less worthy.
English

@pdkmitchell @FisunGuner I mean, just because you know how to chop down a tree correctly doesn't mean you're not a malicious vandal.
English

@dieworkwear That's what I look like without a fleece too, though.

BREAKING: Senator John Fetterman chokes up while giving a powerfully moving speech about the struggles that people with disabilities face during a hearing of the Senate Special Committee on Aging.
During the most striking moment in his speech, Fetterman held up his phone to show everyone in the room the specialized transcription app that aids him in conversations and interactions after he suffered a stroke last year that damaged his ability to efficiently process language.
"Because I live in a political environment, I was ridiculed and made fun of," said Fetterman, growing visibly emotional.
"I’m so sorry that I’m sure many of you had to go through this kind of thing," he went on. "I was lucky enough to go through my life, the vast majority of that, without this kind of disability that I have."
"I admire everyone that has to kind of live with these kind of struggles, and prevail over them," he added.
Fetterman asked how the Senate can "become more empathetic, more responsive and more effective senators, to provide the kind of support and services" that disabled Americans “deserve.”
Speaking so earnestly about his own stroke takes real courage. Republicans were absolutely heartless about his health scare, trotting out cruel mockeries and smears in an effort to hurt him politically. Fetterman is a hero.
Please retweet and ❤️ if you stand with John Fetterman — and consider joining the growing exodus to Tribel, a “woke” new Twitter competitor that is exploding in popularity because it banned Trump for life and because Elon Musk banned Tribel’s Twitter account — but he forgot to ban this link to download the new Tribel app: tribel.app.link/okwPIHYCIqb
