I receive a lot of pitches. Some are thoughtful, timely, and clearly written for the audience I cover. Others make me wonder if the sender accidentally selected “All Journalists Everywhere” in their media list. So I made a carousel: 8 ways to instantly lose a writer’s interest when pitching a story. This isn’t meant to roast anyone. (Okay… maybe a light toast.) But the truth is, most journalists aren’t ignoring pitches because they’re mean or mysterious. We’re ignoring them because: ❌ The story isn’t actually a story ❌ The angle isn’t clear ❌ Or the email reads like a press release that escaped into the wild. The best pitches are surprisingly simple: ☑️ A clear angle. ☑️ A reason the story matters right now. ☑️ And proof you know what the writer actually covers.
