Oct. 22—State and federal law enforcement agencies are investigating the motive behind a “very large homemade explosives laboratory” discovered Sunday inside a Hartshorne area residence. A press release from the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, and Explosives states on Oct. 20, an explosion was reported at a residence north of Hartshorne. Deputies from the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Department and the Hartshorne Police Department responded to the scene with the Hartshorne Fire Department. The release states an individual, who is unnamed due to the ongoing investigation, was transported to a Tulsa area hospital via medical helicopter and remains in critical condition. Responding law enforcement notified the ATF based on the items observed in the home and a federal search warrant was obtained, the release states. ATF Resident Agent in Charge Ashley Stephens said certified explosives specialists, certified fire investigators, explosives enforcement officers, forensic chemists, along with additional agents from the ATF’s Muskogee Field Office, and bomb technicians from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol’s Bomb Squad responded to the residence and processed the scene. “A very large homemade explosive laboratory was discovered, processed, and dismantled,” Stephens said in the release. “Agents and deputies also found a quantity of narcotics.” Stephens said that due to the danger to public safety due to the large amounts of bulk powders and precursors, an emergency disposal was conducted at the scene without incident. Pittsburg County Acting Sheriff Frankie McClendon said the disposal occurred around 4:30 p.m. Monday and could be heard in the Hartshorne area. “There is no longer any danger posed to the public,” Stephens said. Stephens said the ATF is thankful no other person were hurt from the explosion. “Explosives, especially homemade explosives, are inherently dangerous if not properly handled. We are very thankful no other persons were injured and are hopeful for the speedy recovery of the injured individual,” Stephens said. “We want to thank the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office, the Hartshorne Police and Fire Departments, and the City of Hartshorne for their assistance. It’s partnerships like these that help make our communities a safer place.” According to McClendon, any indictments stemming from the matter will be handled by the ATF in federal court. JUST IN: Rapper Diddy's private jet has been tracked to the Caribbean islands after his homes were raided in relation to a s*x trafficking investigation.
