Rosie, an #elephant at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, has passed away at the age of 54. She was born in the wild, and it appears that she's lived her entire life since the age of 2 in Busch Gardens, a park known for their amusement rides and animals. One week ago, one of her veterinarians stated, "Rosie has arthritis in multiple joints. This leads to several secondary conditions, the most concerning of that for Rosie is changes to her toenails and the bottoms of her feet." Have you ever wondered what butterflies and other insects do in the winter? A few enter a dormant state as they are, but mostly it's their eggs and caterpillars that survive the winter and provide the following year's butterflies. And where do these precious eggs and larvae spend winter? In dead vegetation, leaf litter, old plant stems, long dying grass.. ...you know - all the stuff we're dying to get rid of so our gardens look nice and tidy for winter. Nice and dead for winter. PLEASE LEAVE THE GARDEN LITTER. It'll still be there in the spring, you can tidy it away then. But if you want butterflies and pollinators next year, please exhaust your urge to tidy up by litterpicking the streets. Right now your garden is a nursery. Please let it sleep in peace.

You're only going to have this opportunity for a short time.
