@th3FatRat Then people from those cultures should lead the storytelling, musical & visual departments of these movies- not just be casted as actors and consultants. Anyway you can book a stay at Disney's Polynesian Resort that now includes Moana as recognizable IP for your family to enjoy

@JesnCin I’m not entirely sure what that means. Are the Frozen movies turning Norwegian culture into a commodity? Did Mulan turn Chinese culture into a commodity? They’re telling stories that come from these cultures, are they not supposed to try and represent them?

@breaththrou Yes, I'm aware that internalized racism is a factor in all communities. I'm mostly discussing the phenomena where people point out "why are all x characters in American media by diaspora brown, while all x characters in sourceland media are lightskin" It's a generalization.

@JesnCin i'm not disagreeing with your premise ultimately though. imo it may be because gen z growing up in western countries often tend to be more progressive, especially if they don't grow up in a community of people constantly saying "you're too dark!"

I wonder if the reason diaspora poc artists are more likely to include brown and dark skinned characters in their work (compared to sourceland artists) is that they have more firsthand experience recognizing how whiteness others them as a minority.

@JesnCin for some people in the diaspora, this may encourage them to unlearn some of the anti-blackness and colorism that their parents often instill in them. for most, they are still very much racist.

@philinidae Yeah but it's also how that lack of exposure affects perception. Many sourceland indos are exposed to brown indos, but refuse to depict brown indos in their work.

@JesnCin I think it's also exposure. Diaspora artists encounter far more people of a different race, be it White, Black, or Brown. Personally speaking, as a sourceland artist, the majority of my characters are White, Asian, or SWANA, because I only encounter other races very rarely irl.

@JesnCin let's be clear for a moment: (non-black) diaspora populations of color are still very much both colorist and anti-black. like another commentor said, exposure is a factor. alot of people learn things about new cultures and different people through firsthand interaction.

Meanwhile (broadly speaking) as the majority, sourceland artists are more prone to colorism (and by extension, anti-Blackness) in their work. It's not that aren't aware of racism, but they're not being othered the same way diaspora in western countries are.

@th3FatRat This is exactly what Disney is counting on. White productions that hire diverse talent as a shield from criticism. You *feel* like you're showing up for and supporting its stars, but you're also feeding into the machine that turns their cultures into a commodity.

@yiffinhell1 @JesnCin @genetic_monster Ok, but they are the leads in the film. They’re on all the posters and everything. And i promise you that The Rock is making more money on this film than the director and writer are.

@allowableman2 This is too broad a question. So I can only answer back in an equally broad fashion. You do it by writing.

@Zazeronofshadow They're both techincally 1st gen, but I enjoy the contrast of teenage Kara and baby Kal. One retaining more cognizant memories of their source culture, while the other having vaguer idas of a home out of his reach. Transracial adoption and assimilation hits them differently.

@JesnCin @Mr_Periwinkl3 My ideal Both Clark and Kara represent first generation with Clark being 6/8 when krypton exploded But Clark assimilated due to his adopted parents

When you look at it this way, it becomes clear why only Kara really persists in a moderately coherent form. She's a 1st generation immigrant to Clark being raised as a 2nd generation diaspora through adoption. Everyone else lost the plot.

If you approach it from an angle of "how does this legacy character expand on and spin off their predecessor" then you can approach diaspora themes from a new lens of generational difference, gender, race, sexuality, religion and class.
