It's a beautiful day for our last day here at @asb_polyfest 2023. Come check out the amazing performances, and while you're here, stop by @labinaboxnz to learn how photonics and Quantum Technologies are helping us develop solutions to the challenges posed by climate change

@zeus_engineer @NZScienceLearn There is a shit ton of regulation around who goes down for at least one good reason and that’s because if something goes awry, you are very very isolated. Circumventing the system is not advised.

Hey science twitter, I need help. Looking for advice to how to cold call/email field researchers in Antarctica and offer my assistance as an assistant, field lab monkey etc, without sounding like those scam emails that academics get?

@zeus_engineer @NZScienceLearn Concurrently, there are a lot of support jobs (domestic, mechanic, tradie) and those are usually managed separately by a country’s Antarctic programme (or subcontract). For those, you apply through BAS, AntNZ, etc but you have to be permitted to work in that country

@zeus_engineer @NZScienceLearn Identify the projects and contact the project admin/PI to be notified when there are such positions available, then apply. This usually involves working through universities first.

I need to go back to New Zealand to see these caves again. Maybe this summer. I know @swirlgirl31415 is interested despite the long flight. Maybe I could visit with @SiouxsieW and @DrHHNZ as well. Maybe give math and microbiology talks....

@cconcannonsci @WimRay Legit was just telling my bro yesterday that I CANNOT WAIT until my wee nibling discovers dinosaurs because I need someone in the whānau to indulge my nerdery.

@WimRay Do not underestimate the dinosaur nerdery level of the average OCW listener. Many of us had serious, some long-lasting, dinosaur obsessions at some period in our lives.

@MavisDuncanson I mean, UV light does destroy genetic material and has been used to sterilize equipment in hospitals (tho I think clinical settings use far more than you get on a sunny Dunner day…)

With plague in the whare I learn that I have a strong belief in the viricidal power of fresh air and sun. I collect their dishes, put them through hygiene plus wash, wipe trays down and then put them out in the sun

Delighted to be promoted to Assoc. Prof. @otago! But also sheepish, as my successes are not mine but those of my amazing group of students, and helped by a weighty support network (looking at you @MacDiarmidInsti, @CrowleyGroup, @nicgaston et al). Thanks team, you're the best ❤️

@nicgaston @rachelmacg I like low rise (not the ultra - it got ridic there for a bit) for this reason AND I like bootcut cause I feel like they’re more flattering for my figure. Once again, I wonder why we can’t just have all the options on offer always for all the bodies?? Stupid fashion…

Low rise jeans are not coming back if we DO NOT let them. Please join the high waist alliance even if you’re a man and don’t know what these words mean. With many thanks x
