NEW from me in my series about barriers to hep C care in the U.S. This story looks at a missed opportunity: drug treatment programs are an ideal place for hep C testing + treatment, but few offer it. England has expanded care in similar settings — with dramatic results.

A reminder, hepatitis C is CUREABLE. How often can physicians cure such a dangerous illness with a short course of pills? But the barriers to doing this in American drug treatment centers, including methadone clinics, are very real.

Yes, England has a single payer health care which makes these program changes easier. Still, there are drug treatment centers in the U.S. that already do this. It’s just not widespread. It’s possible with dedication and more government support, sources told me.

Are you a Pepco customer seeing higher electric bills? A growing fight is brewing over rate hikes after a court tossed out approval of Pepco’s increases. Consumer advocates want refunds or bill credits — while Pepco says current rates should stay in place for now. @7NewsDC

New: Sen. Rand Paul’s son drunkenly accosted and hurled anti-Semitic insults at Rep. Mike Lawler at a Capitol Hill bar on Tuesday night. His son told Lawler that if Rep Thomas Massie loses, it’s going to be because of “your people.” “My people?” Lawler asked Paul. “Yeah, you Jews,” Paul responded.  “Do you think I’m Jewish?” Lawler asked. “I’m not.” “Oh wow, I’m so sorry for calling you a Jew,” Paul said.  He then said that Jews were “anti-American” and how Lawler and his “Jewish supporters” served Israel more than America. notus.org/congress/willi…

And the WH hasn't submitted a response to SCOTUS' temporary stay of the pause on telehealth abortion pill prescribing, despite the deadline passing 👀supremecourt.gov/docket/docketf…
Shelby Talcott@ShelbyTalcott

New w/ @daveweigel: WH expected to hold a staff level pro-life focused meeting tomorrow, with SBA Pro-Life America president Marjorie Dannenfelser likely to attend. Comes amid growing criticism from some activists about Trump admin priorities (abortion pills in particular) this second term. Dannenfelser declined to confirm or deny the upcoming meeting. WH spox said the admin “continues to engage with stakeholders and activists in this important community to advance the President’s pro-life agenda.”

If you missed my first story, you can read it here: rollcall.com/2026/04/27/dea… I have found it incredibly rewarding to talk to people cured of hep C about how it changed their lives. More stories to come!

All in all, it's a weird time to get public health spending through Congress. I haven't even gotten into reemerging policies that will harm people who inject drugs, the primary group of people impacted by hep C. That will come in future stories.

The second story in my series on barriers to hepatitis C elimination in the U.S. focuses on legislative hurdles. A bill would do what other countries and some states already do: negotiate with drug companies to lower treatment costs and expand access to those who need it most.
