Coming off an ICU service, one phrase has been stuck in my head: “found down.” It’s such a routine part of medicine that it’s easy to read past it. But after seeing it multiple times this month, I found myself stopping to think about what those two words sometimes mean. Sometimes it means someone wasn’t found for hours. Sometimes much longer. This isn’t about blaming families. Many older adults want to live independently. Families live far away, have jobs, or are doing everything they can. And then there are people who truly have no one. People who are estranged from family. People whose social circles have grown smaller over the years. But “found down” always reminds me that social support is part of health too. As people lose independence, it becomes even more important that we check in on each other.
