A friend of mine volunteers for the Samaritans and tells me they’re proposing to close approx 100 “branches” and asking their volunteers to “work” from home. ATM two people work a shift to support each other emotionally. On a call at home, on your own and your baby needs you ?

Just wise, informed and engaged about what's really going on and using this platform (with more than the 73 followers you can muster) to exchange views. As a retired "TV and radio" person I feel sorry for you and your sad little life.

It is a great mistake to assume that everyone who claims to have been a friend of mine was ever considered a friend by me.

I watched a little of Ms Abbot’s speech in the commons re British Steel reading from an iPad. Other MPs are equally culpable most, not all, read from a script. This used to be called out, now it’s the norm and should be banned along with the use of mobile phones in the chamber.

Clearly I am single-handedly responsible for the loss of the UK’s entire industrial base (which, tho it no longer exists in your mind, somehow manages to generate over £220billion a year, employ over 2m and remain among world’s top 12). PS the nutters are out in force this morning

@afneil I wonder if those high end manufacturers buy British Steel for their cars. This morning the plant in Scunthorpe is under threat. Of course it’s owned by the Chinese. Another example of the disastrous global economy coming back to bite us.

America is the second biggest export market for cars produced in the UK, accounting for 16.9 per cent of UK car exports in 2024 — about 100,000 vehicles worth £7.6 billion in sales revenues. Trump has levied a 25% tariff on all cars (and car parts) exported to the US. No carve outs for Britain. US International Trade Commission thinks a 25 per cent tariff on imports will reduce imports by almost 75 per cent — a body blow for the British car industry, which was hardly in the best shape anyway. The Labour government has said nothing even as its efforts to cosy up to the Trump administration come to naught.
