@Nath_Brudenell @thecourettes @RiskeeRidicule Tremendous show. Saturday night with The Fabulous Courettes, muthafuckas. Guitarist Flavia Couri: lively, provocative, seductive & sexy... orchestrated the crowd to let her crowd-surf, whilst still playing muthafuckin' guitar. Powerhouse Danish drummer Martin Thorsen. Dynamite!

@docrussjackson I was a lefty student on my first job in industry in 1977. My line manager & his boss broadened my education. One brought in R-TP & lent me it. Soon after, I bought my own copy & one for my mum, whose dad held stump-speaking politicians to account. A book that opened my eyes.

The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists is a novel by Robert Noonan, written under his pen name Robert Tressell and published in 1914 after his death. George Orwell described it as "a book that everyone should read". It warns us about divisive bigoted bastards like Lee Anderson.

@GrahamSmyth This would be an outstanding signing. Paixao was Eredivisie Player of the Season and featured in Champions League. Feyenoord are 'only' in CL Qualifying stage this year. It's an ambitious attempt.

As per Sky, Leeds United have now made a bid in excess of €30m for Feyenoord winger Igor Paixão. Earlier reports suggesting €35m bid were wide of the mark. Like we said earlier this week, his representatives were impressed by Leeds' presentation and PL is a big draw. #lufc

@NewLeftEViews @adam_tooze There are no birds called seagulls. BUT those gulls that work the English seaside resorts, stealing sandwiches, chips etc., are despicable. I mainly dislike pigeons because some of them steal food meant for smaller birds from our garden feeders.

Society would be a better place if we reserved even an ounce of the hatred we have for pigeons (intelligent, social, faithful) for seagulls (monsters).

@BearlyPolitics @i_iratus I still argue that the plural of octopus is octopodes! Greek rather than Latin. New account followed. Latin felt like a waste of time but it’s been more useful than many other subjects!

@stemaclufc55969 @BerenCross Good question. He looked good, when he had his few chances to play. People say he's not a full-back. Could he be a wing-back if we play (sometimes) with three CBs? Ultimately, I'd trust the judgment of coaching staff who see him regularly in training & around the squad.

Leeds have confirmed the £10m signing of Lille left-back Gabriel Gudmundsson. He's signed a four-year contract. Key hole in the team filled. Another 26yo and 5ft 11in isn't tiny for a full-back. More than 100 Ligue 1 apps, 13 in Champions League. #lufc

@docrussjackson This is about your argument and not about where my politics lie. IF Glastonbury is a music festival THEN having Rod Stewart play there is reasonable (so long as he sticks to the music). Comparing Glasto to the explicitly political Reform UK conference is unfair, in this context.

For the hard of thinking: it's a bad decision to invite right-winger Rod Stewart to play at the left-wing #GlastonburyFestival in the same way it would be a bad decision to invite left-wing Kneecap to play at a right-wing Reform UK conference.

@GrahamSmyth Is this the Habib Diarra who scored for Senegal against England earlier this evening? If so, he might cost a bit more after the transfer window reopens.

@VincentRowlatt @docrussjackson Until you posted that, mine was: "Death is the possibility that ends all one's possibilities." I found the linked article from The Conversation to be easy to understand and somewhat profound. I will send the link to a couple of friends, so that we can discuss it. Thank you both.

Existential philosophy can help you to cope with anguish. Søren Kierkegaard suggests anguish stems from our freedom and the uncertainty it brings, as we crave certainty over freedom. But anguish is inherent in life, and accepting this reduces its fear. Big decisions lack an objective “ideal” choice, and believing in “right” or “wrong” decisions is a narrative fallacy, as we can’t know alternative outcomes. Choosing what feels right for you requires courage, but you are typically the best judge of your own path. theconversation.com/how-existentia…

@docrussjackson I broadly agree with your analyses. Immigration did NOT dominate political discourse in Britain for the few/several years until it regained some traction prior to last Gen Election. See work by @robfordmancs. How Labour & others might have prevented its re-emergence is important.

This leads them to accept and adopt far-right problem definitions (eg "stop the boats" for refugees, or austerity for the financial crash/cost of living crisis). In short, the far-right defines the key issues, particularly immigration, which has dominated politics since 9/11.

@prospect_uk However, Mudde rejects fatalism, emphasizing that liberal democracy’s decline stems mainly from political, media, & corporate elite choices, & can be countered both through responsibility & a proactive defence of pluralist values - but this is NOT coming from parties like Labour.
