It's 2001 in Austin and you're watching the city discover 'Guy Town' beer vaults beneath @2NDStDistrict AUSTIN, Texas (@fox7austin) — Beneath the modern asphalt of Second and Guadalupe streets lies a forgotten network of pre-Civil War engineering that once served as a primary anchor for one of early Austin’s most notorious districts. During construction in 2001, crews uncovered a series of subterranean brick vaults. While the Schneider Brothers’ landmark building at the site dates to 1873, archaeologists confirmed the underlying vaults were constructed in 1858. These arched chambers provided the essential cold storage that fueled the nearby "Guy Town" red-light district during the city’s frontier era. The 1858 Foundation The vaults were the vision of German immigrant Jean Schneider. By 1858, Schneider had begun excavating and bricking the underground chambers to facilitate brewing and cold storage in a climate without mechanical refrigeration. The family utilized the 1858 vaults to brew beer and keep perishable items cold. The earth’s natural insulation allowed the Schneiders to maintain inventory that would otherwise spoil in the Texas heat. Guy Town Connection: Situated on the edge of "Guy Town," the city’s established red-light and saloon district, the Schneider property was a staple at the intersection. The beer brewed and stored in these vaults served as a primary supply for the surrounding area’s active nightlife. Civil War Survival: The vaults remained intact through the Civil War. In 1873, Schneider’s sons, Jacob and John, built the two-story limestone mercantile and saloon over the original 1858 infrastructure. The 2001 discovery provided a rare look at the city’s original industrial footprint. As Austin began the redevelopment of the Second Street District, excavators broke through the street surface to reveal the hollowed-out, red-brick arches still remarkably intact. The find confirmed historical accounts of the family’s operations, revealing that the vaults extended directly beneath the public right-of-way of Second Street. Archaeologists noted the discovery as a significant physical link to Austin’s pre-war commercial development and its early immigrant-led industries. While the 1858 vaults were documented and secured to maintain the structural stability of the modern street, the building above has transitioned into a new era of Austin business. Since 2006, the historic Schneider building has housed Lambert’s Downtown Barbecue. The restaurant’s design preserves the original rugged limestone walls and long-leaf pine floors, maintaining the character established by the Schneider family. Though the subterranean vaults remain sealed and out of sight, they continue to exist as the hidden foundation for one of the city's most historic intersections.
