It's hard to explain to a young person why this was so disappointing. A few factors: First, this may have been the most hyped movie in history. There was a monoculture still. Grownups who were kids when the original released now had young kids of their own.

Second, blockbusters are so poorly made and crafted now that even an extremely flawed movie like the Phantom Menace seems like Jaws by comparison.
