I applied to MIT and some other universities as a Nigerian student some years back and when it was time to submit my maker portfolio, I realized I had nothing to show
I had built plenty of things which I mentioned in my personal essay, but my parents didn’t think I needed a phone at the time so I had very little media documentation of my personal projects and they also thought I was just spoiling everything in the house (maybe I was🙃)
my academic skills were pretty up there (I think) but the maker portfolio? no pictures or video, just awards and certificatesfrom organizations nobody outside my state had ever heard of😂
I’m not saying that was the reason I got rejected ohh, maybe I just wasn’t smart enough😂 but documenting things matter a lot
we grow up being told to face our books but other things matter too. hopefully our generation will know to parent better
I take pictures of everything now. Even if not for anything, for the memories
