Surrounding neighbours pay the price for density-at-all-costs, while developers move on to the next project with their pockets stuffed with cash. Consider this, Calgary.... #yyc #yyccc

If you’re in Calgary, Canada, take a look at this. The infill policy that was the basis for all this is being discussed by City Council again, I hear. Attempts to repeal it? Don’t fall for the Playbook, Calgary.

NEW: They picked the wrong city planner. If you’re interested in how communities need to change to welcome more kinds of housing (& more diverse people), read my op-ed in the ⁦@calgaryherald⁩ this morning. If you’re in Calgary, please share it ASAP. calgaryherald.com/opinion/column…

NEW: Calgary mayor Jeromy Farkas says his understanding is members of council “past and present” are not the “targets” of the ongoing RCMP investigation. He says he believes it’s a business being investigated by police. Background: globalnews.ca/news/11743669/…

How many anti-repeal activists from a single organization are going to be allowed to speak at the rezoning hearing? All I hear are emotional pleas to "save the world". No plans, no facts! This emotional activist drivel is what's killing our society. #YYCCC #YYC #calgary #abpoli

RCMP searched former Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek’s home & seized her phone in City Hall corruption probe. No charges yet — she’s cooperating. What’s next? Could this open a bigger can of worms… including Alberta NDP leader Naheed Nenshi? #JyotiGondek #CalgaryCorruption #RCMP #Nenshi #AlbertaPolitics

Alberta is 661,848 square kilometers (255,541 square miles). The whole thing is covered in signing locations. That is why you are not seeing long lines. Everyone has easy access to sign.

Canada needs to reform how we appoint judges to the superior trial courts and courts of appeal of the provinces, as well as to the Supreme Court of Canada. I am joining with Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, and Quebec Premier François Legault, in writing to Prime Minister Mark Carney requesting a new, collaborative approach, wherein our governments can meaningfully engage in filling judicial positions in our respective jurisdictions. @jjhutton That is not what they said. Zoning against residents desires causes more applications to go to SDAB, thus causing delays.

The Inner City Builders Association agrees - what we’re doing isn’t working. We need policy that has real buy-in from residents to build homes faster and more affordably. #yyccc #calgaryhousing

@DTJazzman @JeffWatsonYYC If anyone neighborhood returns to r1 then they duplex needs to be approved by council. 1 at a time. Every time. You'd support basic r2 zoning? It would be a start.

The more I hear panels and #yyccc's interventions with them, the more I'm convinced that Council should vote against the amendment, and bring the question of what to do with RCG to a separate hearing in the near future. Creating rules "on the fly" during a hearing on repeal is both confusing, and generally bad rule-making practice.

@alamyyc Hopefully #yyccc understands this and that even less people are engaging in this process after almost 2 years of implemented basic zoning. 311 gets more calls every day about more important issues to calgarians.

@RailAlberta @Darren_G_YYC 💯. After almost two years of implementation even less people care than when it was proposed and a mystery. Nothing Burger with big NIMBY voices.

This data could be interpreted as: The overwhelming majority of Calgarians don't care about R-CG. People care more about feeding their families and how they move around by bus, car, train or bike. Going through the circus of zoning is a distraction from core city issues.
DJ Kelly@djkelly

Hey, neighbour! New data work breaks down public submissions against R‑CG changes. The debate about restoring zoning is really about which build forms Calgarians oppose, and the data shows there’s still confusion about what R‑CG is and where it applies. rezoning.pixeltree.ca/2026

I feel optimistic after seeing that almost 2400 written submissions were made to city council. Let's hope that all people are heard. @JeromyYYC Here is mine:  I urge you to vote for the full repeal of the blanket upzoning bylaw. This policy was imposed citywide in 2024 specifically to unlock federal Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) money. The agreement with Ottawa required us to eliminate single-family zoning across every neighbourhood, regardless of local context or infrastructure capacity. While Calgary has already exceeded its housing targets and received over $121 million, the threat of losing the remaining funds should not override what is best for our communities. Furthermore, on the official Government of Canada SDG 11 page (Sustainable Cities and Communities), the HAF is listed as a core action under the United Nations 2030 Agenda. It funds municipalities to “increase housing supply and promote the development of affordable, inclusive and diverse communities that are low-carbon and climate-resilient.” This shows the policy was shaped by international sustainable development priorities, not solely by Calgary’s local needs or neighbourhood input. The overwhelming attendance at the previous public hearing showed how frustrated citizens are with the lack of transparency and sincere responses from the Mayor and City Council on this issue. Residents simply want honest engagement and the ability to protect the character of the neighbourhoods they chose when they bought their homes. I support more housing, but not through a one-size-fits-all blanket driven by external conditions rather than community-driven planning. It has created real pressure on parking, traffic, schools, and community identity. Repealing the bylaw and returning to targeted, locally planned growth is the responsible choice. It gives homeowners certainty and respects the strong public resolve we have already demonstrated. Please hear our voices on March 23 and vote for complete repeal.
