Look at your bookmarks right now. Ridiculous, right? This doesn't mean that college is the only way. I know successful people who dropped out after high school. I've worked with folks who built their careers on hard work and didn't need college to succeed. They've done great! I'm sure somebody will reply to this post to tell me, "bIlL GaTes And StEvE jOBs dROpPeD oUt!" Thanks, genius! These mega-successful people are the exception that proves the rule. Honestly, this is even a topic of conversation because the cost of college is nuts. If top-notch education were free or cheap, this wouldn't be controversial. Think about this: Why do universities keep raising prices, and people keep showing up? If college wasn't that important, wouldn't people stop paying for it? Me and my wife went to college. My daughter is going next year. It doesn't matter how much I keep hearing that "ChatGPT is a university degree" clickbait bullshit: I'll do everything I can so my son goes to. You don't need a six-pack to swim, but it'd be nice to have one.

@fchollet I see a difference. If you ask someone Do you undestand X? Or if you ask Are you intelligent enough to understand X?. If someone doesn't understand X, maybe is because the question is wrong, not because a lack of intelligence.

Maybe it's just semantics, but I don't think you can draw a clear distinction between "understanding" and "intelligence". If you understand a task or a thing, then you possess intelligence with regard to that particular bit of the universe. It's the same concept.
