And now we have 17,000 people out of work that wouldn't have been out of work had they let the merger go through. And I would argue that the two combined would have been much stronger and been able to handle this spike in prices. Because let's face it, energy prices, oil went to $120 under Biden. We had average gas prices around the country over $5. And and airlines didn't go out of business then. So look, we we had those same spikes under Biden. We've had this spike here under Trump. I believe it's temporary.”

The merger wasn’t blocked by Warren. It was blocked by Judge William Young, a Reagan appointee, who ruled it violated antitrust law because eliminating Spirit would raise fares for budget travelers. Spirit also didn’t fail because of the merger block. Industry analysts agree it failed because costs rose and larger airlines learned to compete with its model. Bessent is blaming Democrats for an antitrust ruling made by a Reagan judge applying laws Republicans wrote.
