@MattWalshBlog Kids feel really empowered "when they're a big help!" Doesn't matter what you're doing or how ridiculous the given role is. Have them participate with you on some level and praise them for being helpful. Start young.

The US will never develop better soccer talent because kids in America would rather play football, basketball, baseball, and maybe even hockey.

@dustydolphins No doubt. The pain I had at the time was that I was pretty sure his replacement would play better.

I genuinely don’t care to see Pulisic play for the USA anymore. Seems like he’s only playing here because he can be the best player on the whole team. USA doesn’t need players like that we need players that love the US.

No. He's correct. You just misunderstand priory. Parents pay because church and community have broken down and people would rather pay than put effort into something that could be free. The South could possibly pull this off with a parent at home. But they're watching football.

Just a putrid take from Lalas. I expected nothing more. It’s crazy to look at how soccer is viewed in other parts of the world vs. the USA. Most countries see soccer as a symbol of everyday working class people taking part in, while in the USA it’s all pay to play bougie class.
Alexi Lalas@AlexiLalas

Youth soccer (youth sports) is a competitive market with businesses selling a product that obviously customers are willing to pay for. I’d love if soccer was free to all. But who is going to pay for all this free soccer?

@CalWilliamsComm America's long ago started preferring to purchase their way out of anything that looks like effort. Church and communities been broken down. Neighborhoods are gated and fenced off. Both parents are working. The South could make this work, but they're watching football.

Lex, growing up I paid £2 to use the training facilities or fields on a Thursday night or Sunday morning. So many have this figured out. I get there’s travel needs in the US, but it doesn’t need to cost what it does.

@jakehasleft You can absolutely replace these costs with parental effort, volunteerism, and organization. The reality is most Americans would rather pay for ease of use. This is a cultural problem, not a governmental problem.

So disingenuous, it should be free and I guarantee you there’s a way to make it free, but at the very least it needs to be affordable for everyone. Youth sports should not be an area where the goal is to maximize profits

What's particularly infuriating about this post is that Lalas, while well-known for his political stupidity, isn't some random dumb American opining. He is well-acquainted with youth soccer development in Europe and knows that only the US has turned it into a rich kids' sport.
Alexi Lalas@AlexiLalas

So you think the American taxpayer should fund youth soccer? You should definitely run for office on that. What about piano lessons, SAT prep, dance, math tutoring, horse riding, fencing etc? Should taxpayer fund those? Also, our goverment financially supports many sports.

@Yimbymanatee Swimming is fun. You often have to force the kids to stay in soccer when she sign them up. They don't watch soccer, or have heroes in soccer. That's the difference.

We do so well at swimming because millions of Americans tune in every week to watch swimming and sports cable shows and radio shows are dominated by hours of debate about swimming. Oh wait…
The New York Times@nytimes

From @TheAthletic: It’s time to admit the uncomfortable truth: The U.S. may never win a men’s World Cup. "This sport belongs to the world. We borrow it every few years," our columnist writes. "America is not built for the beautiful game." nyti.ms/4aGgrvA

"We welcomed you into our country" Unless you were the Iranian team, Iranian fans, a Somalian referee, the Egyptian team at an airport, the dozens of countries whose fans were denied visas for no logical reason.
Joe McBride@McBrideLawNYC

The anti-American hatred from Europe after Team USA’s loss is sad. We welcomed you into our country. We bought your drinks. We sang your songs with passion. We did it because we love you. We still do, because we know you’re better than this. God Bless America.

@CamusOverEasy Cool. Now mention the part where impoverished Americans still have a higher standard of living than the lower half of Norwegians. Also for the record, roughly 36% of all Americans have free healthcare.

@tsigalkoesque More a clashing a perspectives. Our perspective is that of abundance, and anything can be accomplished even as an underdog. It seems the rest of the world is just plain given up. I promise you, if anything, we'd wish for you to feel the way we do.
