@TJWalkerRadio Indiana appears to have a top 15-20 roster. Louisville/Tennessee top 10-12. Duke, UConn, Florida, Michigan, Arizona aren’t skipping a beat. It’s okay though. It’s only year 3. Mark won a national title here as a player so it’s clear he understands the assignment… 🫠

When both programs hired new coaches a couple years ago it was obvious Pat Kelsey and Mark Pope would not only be judged by their own program standards and expectations, but also compared directly to one another. Almost immediately both fan bases felt pretty good about their hires- year one for both coaches brought fun moments and a decent launching point, even if neither season ultimately met program expectations. Both coaches then went to work on upgrading their rosters for year two. Pat Kelsey showed he could land five-star talent and make real splashes in the portal, while Pope appeared to put together one of the deeper teams in college basketball. But neither second season met expectations (for a variety of reasons). In fact, both were a bit of a step back from year one, which I don’t think many people expected. Now, heading into a make-or-break year three for both coaches and both programs the contrast is becoming glaring. One coach continues to underwhelm while turning a proud program into something of a punchline behind the scenes. The other attacked the portal like his job depended on it and made it clear his only goal was to build the most talented roster possible. UK fans have spent so much time comparing Pope to Cal, but Pope is getting outworked by more than just Arkansas. I'm not sure there's a rival where UK is currently in a better position. Louisville fans are excited about the upcoming season. Kentucky fans are stuck in a near-constant state of frustration and meltdown. Pat Kelsey was ready for the portal and the year three offseason. Mark Pope wasn't, and that's a major issue for Kentucky.

At this rate: UK needs to look into saving some of this years NIL money to use towards buyout money next spring I’m going to enjoy my summer, but.. Dreading this November.

@chrisdrummer21 I agree. Kentucky should be leading the charge during this era. They have the money to be top 3-5 every year for NIL spending in hoops, have the facilities… …but they lack the leadership. That changes very soon (and I’m excited). This has been a waste of a decade for fans

@jncoyl2 I’ve been screaming it from the mountain tops. We are lucky enough to have one of the flagship programs of the sport at our university. It must be protected. This new AD needs understand this. The old one didn’t.

@chrisdrummer21 I believe he knows who he needed to sign but for the most part can’t sign these guys for a variety of reasons. Bad vibe from last season, negative recruiting, lack of a GM, and being just as stubborn as our previous coach but in different ways. It needs to get corrected.

@jncoyl2 It is just so mind blowing at this point. He stood up there and said “I understand the assignment”. Then he goes into this crucial year 3 like this? Bringing in such a mid team with no star players. I just don’t understand what he’s thinking

@ChrisHarte7 Keep moving with the grapple hook once he jumps at you. Shoot from a distance and grapple once he jumps at you again. Repeat until you take him down.

That was maybe the biggest issue for me at Kentucky. Should have had a GM plan with two people working together solely on portal plan since November. One does initial evals and other works on relationships with all the agents.

When Mark Pope was hired, the biggest question mark was whether he could recruit elite talent. Two years later, that's still a major concern. In fact, Kentucky feels like repellant to the top high school players right now. At a point, that simply cannot be allowed to continue.

I’m not a fan of any pro team. I watch the NFL religiously, NBA (playoffs only), NHL (playoffs only). I bleed blue and that’s it. That might need to change this fall. I’ll need some much-needed distractions.

I think there is a chance that at some point in the near future, there will be a push within UK to force Mark Pope to hire a GM, whether he wants one or not
