🌏 Once abundant, Regent honeyeaters are on the edge of extinction—only about 250 remain. As their woodland was cleared, their songs fell silent. Those born in zoos only sang other bird species' songs. Recordings were played from dawn to dusk to teach them their own songs—without success. So wild ones were deployed as vocal coaches, and the students have learned the songs well enough to teach others. Their own songs are critical to reproduction in the wild. This is meant to be a positive story, but it left me filled with sadness of how much we are destroying, and the precious little we save. Article, video and research in 🧵

UNDERSTANDING EMPIRE: U.S. MILITARY IN AUSTRALIA US encroachment of Australian territory in the context of alliance building has to stop. Australia is well disposed to an alliance but not on the terms that the US is persisting with. For decades our government has been seduced by a Defence and military elite who have in turn been seduced over decades of collaborative training and operations. But not enough attention given to sovereignty and its erosion over years of neglect. A succession of Defence Ministers and National Cabinets have conceded too much which must now be arrested and pushed back to the place where our sovereignty and self-respect are restored, are subordinated to the AS-US alliance and remain supreme in our dealings with the US. Pine Gap facility must be returned to its former role as a listening station and the US role for control of its satellite constelations evicted.
