The defining obstacle is a long climb of 14.4 km at 5.9% a serious ascent, but crucially one that comes far enough from the finish to complicate rather than guarantee selection. On pure profile alone, this kind of stage often looks ideal for a breakaway. However, race context matters. XDS Astana Qazaqstan Team is serious about protecting the general classification then the break may never be allowed the kind of freedom usually required to survive. That does not necessarily mean a full peloton sprint, but it does suggest the race could be controlled enough to prevent a truly dangerous escape from building an insurmountable advantage. My pick Tobias Lund Tobias Lund looks well-suited to this profile. He is not just one of the fastest finishers in the race he is also a rider capable of surviving moderate climbing difficulties far better than many traditional sprinters. This stage’s long climb is demanding, but not necessarily so severe that it should eliminate a rider with Tobias Lund’s resilience, especially if the pace is controlled rather than explosive. If the race ends in the selective reduced sprint that now appears most likely, Tobias Lund may genuinely be the strongest overall option. One particularly dangerous challenger is Orluis Aular. Aular already showed last season that he can thrive on similar selective sprint stages, particularly those where climbing resistance matters almost as much as finishing speed. This kind of terrain hard enough to drop pure sprinters, but not enough to eliminate versatile finishers is ideal for him. Ben Turner is another highly credible contender. Turner’s profile is built for demanding, punchy, selective stages, and this sort of terrain should suit him extremely well if the finale becomes attritional rather than purely fast. Corbin Strong remains one of the most logical names for this kind of day. Few riders combine selective durability and sprinting strength as consistently as Strong on medium-hard terrain. Lukáš Kubiš is another intriguing option not particular a regular winner but he should be in the mix. Even the GC leader, Thomas Silva, cannot be dismissed. His finishing speed could once again make him relevant. Breakaway possibilities: While a selective sprint remains the most likely scenario, there are also highly dangerous long-range attackers to watch. Filippo Ganna is perhaps the most obvious wildcard. Having already lost significant time, he could be granted tactical freedom, and if he attacks on the descent or flatter run-in, his time-trial engine makes him exceptionally dangerous.
