20 July 1943 | 1,000 Jews deported from Drancy in German-occupied France arrived at Auschwitz. After the selection, 369 men & 191 women were registered in the camp. The remaining 440 people were murdered in a gas chamber.
Among those registered in the camp was Alma Rosé, an Austrian Jewish violinist, a niece of Gustav Mahler. She was registered with the no. 50381.
She was initially placed in Block 10 of the main camp for sterilization experiments. There, she was recognized by one of the other inmates. Thanks to the efforts
of the block leader, a violin was secretly brought to her, which she played in the evenings.
Over time, word of her exceptional playing reached
the SS guards, as a result of which she was transferred to Auschwitz II-Birkenau and appointed the conductor of the women’s orchestra. She held this function for 10 months.
At the beginning of April 1944, she perished in the camp.

Today in history, on July 19th 1901, this Jewish woman, Pola Ekchaus (nee Niemenczyńska) was born in Wilno (current day Lithuania) - then annexed by the Russian Empire.
She was abducted to the Auschwitz death camp from on July 29, 1942. She did not survive, according to the Auschwitz Memorial Museum.
Like many others who died in the Holocaust, we don't know exactly how she died, except that it was due to Nazi ideology.
This photo has been colorized by @joecocker15.
May Pola's memory be a blessing🎗️
