I was en route to get a haircut this morning but decided to reschedule to a later time since I had to drive that way later today. I turned around, came back home, grabbed my school text book and sat down next to my daughter who was watching a tv series. Half watching and reading about project management I witnessed a scene where a same sex relationship between two young teenagers was introduced into the narrative. It was a non threatening, emotionally inviting scene that fostered sympathy, understanding and care as the two characters helped each other through grief.
I’ve fallen short in my parenting at times, especially in watching the shows or reading the literature that interest my children but I thank God for this divine appointment. Even when busyness overwhelms, I am the primary guardian of their hearts and minds. It takes time, intention and courage to engage and investigate, when it’s easier to acquiesce. Still, that is my responsibility.
As the show continued, I simply asked her what she thought about the scene. What followed was an honest conversation about sexuality, culture and God’s word. We talked about the dignity and value of every human, our need for forgiveness from sin, and how the world’s norms are separate from God’s prescription. We talked about what love is and what it requires of us. We talked about being keenly aware of the subtlety of sin and how its seemingly innocent introduction is not a coincidence.
Lastly, today was an opportunity to say out loud that no matter what she does, who she likes, or what she thinks we as her parents don’t love her because of perfect decisions but because of who she is. We are here for her forever and for always, even if her actions would warrant our disapproval. Similarly, while God desires us to live in accordance with his will, his love extends beyond our disobedience.
Parents, we must be aware of what our children are digesting. Changing the future starts with molding the minds of the young. There is a battle for the hearts of the youth and too many of us are oblivious. Take a moment to sit and watch with them. Ask them who they are talking to or what videos have grabbed their interest. Preview that series they can’t wait to watch.
I didn’t tell my daughter she could no longer watch that series. Sure, there are times when that decision would be prudent. But today it offered an opportunity for a lesson that will develop principles she will need to practice multiple times over the next several years. The balance between restriction and conscience is child specific. My hope is that her internal compass grew today. I was reminded that I cannot fall asleep at the switch. There’s too much at stake.
