@jamestplunkett I was struck by this line in his FT interview - which makes this thread very pertinent

Anyway, that's for another day. The point is just that the case for diversity and inclusion in tech isn't just about ethics, although that's a good enough reason on its own. It also matters because a homogenous tech sector just doesn't function very well. (/End)

So I'm increasingly persuaded by the argument that the tech bro mentality, and the lack of diversity at the frontier, is a problem of real economic significance. 🧵

@jamestplunkett Most of my international relations degree (albeit almost 2 decades ago) boiled down to this argument through lens of communitarian vs cosmopolitan debate. So not sure true no one argues!

I quite like this argument against discounting from Parfit. No-one says we should discount over space, so why do we discount over time?

This is a fabulous anecdote on Madeleine Albright in obit by Edward Luce. She was first US Secretary of State I remember. Being followed by Powell, Rice & Clinton too easy to be grow complacent role didn’t have to be a white man.

Finally got round to opening Joan Robinson’s Economic Philosophy, and what an opening. Thanks @jamestplunkett for the tip!

@jamestplunkett I still quote historical examples from a technological innovation course at HKS esp on margarine and lightbulbs - why I loved the case study based model.

(Side note: I'm not sure what this says about the levelling up white paper and the Medicis. I guess maybe cut them some slack for at least having a go?!) (/End)

It’s so daft how little we use history to inform public policy (and in fact how little we use design, sociology, psychology, and most disciplines outside economics/STEM). This chapter on US railroads is a good example. So many lessons for digital platforms. (1/n)

It shouldn’t take bravery to ride to school or walk to the shops but sometimes it fees that way These changes simply clarify what safe and courteous road users already do. They ensure those with propensity to cause most harm, carry the most responsibility. The AA and RAC agree 👏

We’re set to introduce changes to The #HighwayCode, which will come into effect from Saturday 29th January. Read more on what this means for all road users: gov.uk/government/new…

Agree with this child first passport arrived 12 days after applying online (website says expect 4 weeks). And great digital experience with updates throughout. Well done HM Passport Office!
UK Passport Waiting Time@passportwaiting

@SimonCalder Average passport processing times are the quickest they have been since the pandemic started. Now is definitely a good time for people to apply for their passports. #passport #travel

I recommend reading more about Robinson, one of the most compelling and creative economists of the 20th century. A great writer too. Overlooked for a Nobel and far more than just a member of Keynes' gang, which she's often presented as. (14/n) en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_Robi…

As we go into the third year of the pandemic, the New Scientist team has been delving deep into what we can expect in 2022. I urge you: do not expect the pandemic to end next year. Let’s all go into the new year with realistic expectations.
