I see all you guys out there flexing your 408 point vice captained Marzhew’s. Damn kids these days have it so easy. They wouldn’t survive in the glory days of sitting down on a Friday night to watch a 2015 Corey Parker 110 and feeling like you’ve just won the lottery. Or a 2016 Paul Gallen 85 in pure base and texting the work group chat and telling George from finance that you’re beating him in your H2H this week. Or perhaps you crave the feeling you get watching a little 2018 Jake Trbojevic making 52 tackles and a cheeky short ball to Shaun Lane sending him over for a try and a well earnt 120 on a Saturday, and you go to bed knowing that’s guaranteed you a green arrow. Life was simple.

Spent the weekend properly thinking about this and I keep coming back to the same point. The NRL product is in the worst spot I can remember. In trying to manufacture “entertainment”, the game has actually become less enjoyable to watch. It feels forced. High scoring doesn’t equal quality, and right now there’s too many games that just aren’t competitive. The gap between the top and bottom is massive. Some clubs recruit and develop well, others look completely lost, and the result is too many one sided games that are over early. And now we’re adding two expansion teams into that environment? The talent pool is already stretched. If anything, this risks making the bottom end even worse. It’s not just about more teams or more points. It’s about balance, quality and making games feel like they matter again.
