@boschbot THE BOLLOCKS OR KIDNEY DAGGER was a popular knife to have. Bosch painted it several times. Part of the handle was dug up from the market square De Hof in Amersfoort. Circa 1350-1400. Material: boxwood wood. Courtesy of Center for Archeology of the City and Region of Amersfoort.

Ik zat al te kijken wat de heli bij de Veluwe zou gaan doen. Hij zat al laag. Wat je vaak ziet is dat bij slecht weer het wolkendek op de Veluwe lager zit.

@caseiokey @boschbot @simonsketch Paradise of Love was primarily cultivated by an elite culture. Popular equivalent is Land of Plenty where fulfillment of material desires(eat, drink) & reversal of daily duties (idling, sleep) come to the fore. Elite’s wishful dream fulfills more non-material needs (courtly love)

@boschbot The orange shed in Bosch’s Love Garden was little explained. @Simonsketch put me on track: the claws resemble a Crab. I also see black spines of a Sea urchin, but NOT of Dutch types. Why a Crab 🦀 *Sea life connects with Venus *The astrological Crab starts summer *Crab = fickle

@boschbot Serious St.Bernardus (1090-1153) wasn’t happy with depictions of “monsters” in churches & abbeys: “What’s the point of those horny monkeys,- those monstrous centaurs? What do those creatures, half beast half man, have to look for there?.. When one is not ashamed of such nonsense”

@caseiokey @boschbot Horrendous ideas of Hieronymus Bosch & Studio were not always unique… People in a cooking pot: at LEFT on the Last Judgment/Vienna, ca.1500; and at RIGHT on The Hell, by an unknown 16c Portugese master, at the MNAA Lisbon.

@ThisSideOp @caseiokey @boschbot Bax(1956) describes the round object “(a stem to which) a TRANSLUCENT BULBOUS FRUIT is attached with a porcupine in it.” There are many such fruit(/skins) on Bosch’s painting. This is the only time a porcupine is in it: keeping the sharp needles apart? Or hinting at prickly sin?

@caseiokey @boschbot In the Men’s Parade on the Garden work, various male mounts have NEGATIVE meaning. The men are uncontrolled and not controlling. Unicorns however had mostly a POSITIVE meaning. As Hieronymus points at: regulating one’s drifts. And on a Pre-Paradise wing riding is just for fun!

@ArtGuide_db Bosch deliberately changed the panel, so that the situation would be ambiguous. Originally, the miser held the bag w.valuables in his hand. In his other hand he held a golden vase of some sort. It almost seems that he was bribing death! (Black & white image is the underpainting)

@ArtGuide_db The dying man's left hand is wavering exactly in the direction BETWEEN the bag with valuables, and the Crucifix. Even at his death, he is still in doubt. (Death and the Miser-Hieronymus Bosch, ca.1500. At the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.)

How does one begin with a blank canvas and end up creating such a masterpiece? Just take a look at this lace, the fabric, the glowing pearls, everything… pure Rembrandt genius from 1639.

@boschbot The Living Bible has a similar (transformed) version of Proverbs 16:27 “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop; idle lips are his mouthpiece” Literal KJV text is: “An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire.”

@artinsociety @boijmans Hieronymus Bosch painted FOX & COCKEREL at least 4x, ~1500AD. It reminds me of the story of Reynard the Fox. In the time of Reynard, a cunning fox used to be seen as the personification of the DEVIL. Perhaps Bosch still knew that. Or just added the scenes for the lurking danger…

@artinsociety FOX AND COCKEREL is this hard to date drawing by Hieronymus Bosch @boijmans museum Rotterdam, on the backside of the drawing Two Old Women. Rests of an earlier meal are present in front. They are of a duck or similar, such as goose or swan.

In this pen and ink drawing by Hieronymus Bosch, an owl looks out balefully from hole in dead tree, with fox & rooster in its roots. Human eyes on foreground, & trees with ears in background, illustrate Orwellian-like proverb on being careful of being watched or overheard (1500)

@JulianOD @fakehistoryhunt You’re right that the crossbow is depicted wrong by the illustrator of the TOP image. The limp (bow) should be at front, the string closer to the shooter. My remark hinted at times when most books were made in monasteries. The Bosch Studio painted better crossbows; BOTTOM image.
