Long before the interstate system, Florida was home to one of the first great auto trails in America: The Dixie Highway.
Completed around 1917, the red-brick road near Bunnell and Espanola was part of a pioneering network that stretched more than 5,000 miles from Chicago to Miami. For decades, it carried families, farmers, and entrepreneurs south, linking communities and fueling growth.
Today, this 10-mile section in Flagler County, known as the Old Brick Road, is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places and still invites visitors to “travel back in time.”
