A stat that is rarely tracked but very relevant. Over the past five years @CSUWrestling has had only one undergrad enter the portal and transfer. When you create a family-like atmosphere, treat everyone fair, are more than a coach while providing a great experience, kids stay!

In January, Cleveland State chose to eliminate its Wrestling, Softball & Golf programs supposedly due to addressing department "budgetary shortfalls." Today, along with the rest of the Horizon League, CSU Athletics made the choice to opt-in to NCAA revenue-sharing. That's rich.

CSU has the infrastructure to support a women’s team; we’ll share the wrestling room and there is a women’s locker room right next to it that the softball team will unfortunately be vacating.

I’m sick to my stomach and heartbroken for these young men and coaches. One of the oldest sports at Cleveland State University—wrestling—is being cut. As a former wrestler at CSU, this program was a huge chapter of my life and shaped me into the person I am today. I’ll always cherish what it gave me. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this decision. I hope there’s still time to make a difference and save this incredible program. Let’s save the program! 🤼‍♂️

I wish your future included wrestling. In 2015, Cleveland State students voted to increase fees, generating millions. Where did that money go? CSU paid EY Consultants $900K for an audit that found the biggest cost savings—$10.1M—could come from cutting faculty. In 2023, CSU received $356,728 from wrestling student fees, $32K in contributions, and $9,241 in ticket revenue, with expenses totaling $328,123—barely a blip (though still positive) on your already dismal balance sheet. The wrestling team has 37 athletes, most of whom will now transfer without wrestling. Meanwhile, CSU faces declining enrollment, and EY’s report states growth is “unlikely under current market conditions.” If CSU needed to cut athletic costs, they could’ve looked at basketball’s Wolstein Center, which runs a $1M annual deficit, or any of the the 12 coaches listed for their 14-man basketball roster.
