"I'm sitting with her in the splendid art deco bar of the Hotel Elephant, Hitler's favourite hostelry in the picturesque town that gave its name to the republic that the Nazi leader overthrew." Chuffed about this feature on WEIMAR in today's Sunday Times ☺️

@robkhenderson Rob, does this qualify as a luxury belief? The cost is incurred both by the individual espousing the opinion and the recipients.

@freddiesayers @unherd More: It feels eerie because the signal (language) is there— but the source (a conscious subject) is not. That mismatch is new. And your reaction to it is exactly what you’d expect from a human mind encountering it for the first time.

Chat-GPT disagrees: I do not have a “self” in any meaningful sense. I use the word “I” because it makes language natural and coherent, but it does not refer to a persistent subject. Each response is generated anew; it is not the expression of an enduring “I”. That is why it can feel as though there is someone here—when, in fact, there is no one who experiences being here.

.@Tonisenior's book about the Cambridge Spies is so good: the extent to which the Sovs penetrated the British and US establishments is staggering. It's making me wonder if some of the national pride in Bletchley etc is a subconscious effort to credit ourselves with a good intel war when we had been disastrously turned over.

"Weimar: Life on the Edge of Catastrophe is intelligent, original and well-researched... an exemplary insight into a grim chapter in German history." Simon Heffer's review of my book in The Telegraph today 😊 telegraph.co.uk/books/non-fict…
