The average UK graduate leaves university at 21 with £45,000 in student debt accruing 7.3% interest from day one. Gets a job paying £28,000. After tax that's about £1,950/month. Rent in any city worth living in starts at £800. Add bills, food, transport, and the loan repayment they take before you even see the money. You're 21, supposed to be at the start of your life, already in a £45k hole growing at £270 a month in interest alone, earning about £4 an hour after real expenses. And they told you this was the smart move.

The WSJ just ran the most depressing headline in human history. The piece is a first-person column from two retirees. They say that without bosses, deadlines, or meetings, there's nothing to interrupt zombie doomscrolling. "We retirees have a particular vulnerability," writes one of the co-authors, Stephen Kreider Yoder, a retired WSJ editor. "We have time on our hands and no external authority telling us to snap out of it." "Let's have a show of hands: "How many retirees have ended a day looking up from the phone, wondering where the time went and feeling the mental equivalent of having finished off a family-size bag of potato chips?" "Yeah," he writes. "That's what I thought." We spend decades trying to buy back our time ... and then spend it staring at our screens.

Scrolling is pure evil. An hour of brainrot doesn’t just leave a hole where something meaningful could have been but also actively degrades the machinery you’d need to fill that hole. It corrupts your capacity for sustained attention. Books become harder, conversations feel slower, your own thoughts start to bore you. Over time, the range of things that can hold your interest narrows until you’re left with a shrinking circle of stimulation that only the algorithm can satisfy. It erodes your relationship to yourself. Curiosity fades. Compassion requires a kind of patient attention that atrophies. You stop wondering what you care about because the question itself feels effortful. What’s left is a stable, “comfortable” numbness. Not only five years subtracted from your life, but a slow hollowing out of the person who would have lived them.
Justin Skycak@justinskycak

You have to understand. Spending 1 hour per day on brainrot is insane. That's about 6% of your waking day. About 5 years of your waking life. Half a decade. On brainrot. Just gone. Zero return. Zero fulfillment. Zero meaning. Zero contribution to the other parts of your life.

Today at a conference, I asked a room of 250 developers this question: "If your child was 18, would you recommend they pursue a career in programming today?" No one said yes. No one. Sobering.

Your brain shrinks when you’re depressed. Not metaphorically. MRI scans of 351 patients found the part that handles memory and learning loses 8-10% of its volume on average. One study measured 19% loss on the left side alone. And it stacks. Every new depressive episode chips away more. The longer depression goes untreated, the more volume disappears from the hippocampus, the region where you form new memories and hold onto what you’ve studied. Lose volume there and preparing for an exam starts to feel like pouring water into a cracked glass. Depression also floods your body with cortisol, the stress hormone your system normally saves for real physical danger. About half of people with major depression have elevated cortisol levels. Over time, that cortisol eats away at brain cells in two places: the memory center, and the region you depend on for focus, planning, and making decisions. The exact equipment a student needs to sit down, open a textbook, and actually retain what they read. When researchers tested depressed patients against healthy controls, depression impaired every part of working memory, your brain’s ability to hold several pieces of information and use them at the same time. A 2023 review of over 13,000 kids and teens with depression confirmed the pattern: lower scores across memory, attention, and the ability to plan and organize their own thinking. The number that changed how I think about this: during active depression, 94% of patients in a 3-year study reported cognitive problems. After the depression lifted, 44% still did. Mood recovers. But how fast your brain takes in and responds to information stays damaged. A 2025 review tracking over 12,000 recovered patients across 244 studies found that slowed mental speed dragged down almost everything else. Task-switching, filtering distractions, planning ahead, word recall. All measurably worse, and almost entirely traced back to that one deficit. On campus, 41% of college students have moderate or major depression according to the Healthy Minds Study. NAMI reported that 64% of students who leave college before graduating cite mental health as the reason. Depression alone raises the dropout risk by 24%. 2.8 million views on this tweet. These people aren’t failing because they stopped caring or lost discipline. Depression is taking apart the brain machinery that academic performance depends on, one episode at a time.

No one talks about how humbling it is to lose all your academic potential because of your mental health.

I predicted the European hard left (or what is considered that rn at least) was going to explode last year and some people laughed it off but I still do think this is going to be the case in a lot of euro countries pretty soon, most young people I know are "jokingly" talking to me unprompted about nationalizing stuff which is insane compared to just 5 years ago lol
