@BElliottAuthor Thanks for the photo, Brian. @Ianlyall9 is correct. Wounded at Nab Valley 1/7/16, one of the less visited yet important 1st July killing fields. He's buried @CWGC Heilly Station Cemetery.

The Battle of Aubers opened #OTD in 1915. It epitomises the British public's perception that #WW1 soldiers were sacrificed needlessly in over-the-top attacks. Jack Newman Gilbey was present with the 2/Welsh Regiment and later penned these sad words about the disastrous day.

@agh57 The solitude of Redan Ridge is special. On every visit since my first in 1993 I've had the place to myself. I find it odd that the place remains largely off the tourist trail. Is it because of access?

Brigadier General James Riddell was killed in action while commanding the 149th (1st Northumberland) Infantry Brigade. His headstone records that he was killed leading his brigade just five days after arriving on the Western Front. 📍Tyne Cot Cemetery 🇧🇪

More than 350,000 hectares of French forest was cut down to supply the insatiable demands of the First World War - trenches, huts, railways, crates, fuel. So much timber was exported from Britain that the Forestry Commission was set up in 1919.

@Ianlyall9 I see his brother 2nd Lieut. Leslie Montrose Ekin, also 8/Y&L, died alongside him at Nab Valley. Devastating news for their family.

My friend blows this whistle on the 1st July over his grave, as mentioned by @Taff_Gillingham in the past the *wrong* whistle for an infantry officer it was reportedly recovered with his body.

Returned home to Yorkshire last week and managed to take a picture of this fine memorial at St Mary's Church in Barnsley. George Bell's youngest brother Ernest, would join the 1st Barnsley Pals in 1914 and fought on the Somme in 1916.

Commonwealth War Graves
The graves of two British soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the First World War were formally rededicated in France this week. “We are honoured to be able to rededicate the graves of Captain Martin Warren and Lance Corporal Arthur Mantle. Thanks to extensive and meticulous research, it has been possible to confirm that two previously unnamed graves at Pargny British Cemetery and Joncourt East British Cemetery near Saint Quentin are the final resting places of these two men, who gave their lives in fierce fighting on the Western Front more than 100 years ago. It is important that, wherever possible, every soldier who died is commemorated by name, and today we reaffirm our commitment to care for their graves in perpetuity.” CWGC Director of Commemorations Richard Hills. @swanranger @WW1IEPER1917 @historycalled The majority of them are today buried in @CWGC Vieille-Chapelle New Military Cemetery, Lacouture. They were concentrated there in 1919 following exhumation from Rouge Croix Cemetery. At least one is missing and remembered on the Le Touret Memorial.
