@tippett_wendy @country_raized I see it the opposite way. We are all in this together, and Twin Cities taxes support those small towns and rural areas, not the other way around. Small towns are net beneficiaries of all the economic activity in the metro. Photo credit: off the end of my dock on the Iron Range.

@country_raized @johnerent Outside the cities are beautiful conservative little lake towns… - they are going to tax us to death though… so sad

@Dontcallmejunor That’s OK. I’ll stick to MN, where more Fortune 500 companies per capita have chosen to headquarter than any other state, providing loads of high-paying jobs. Exceptional median income to cost of living ratio. Unmatched quality of life!

@johnerent Or move to North Dakota or Iowa, you’ll live just as long, and be able to afford to do so.

@ThxTom90228 If you knew how to read, you’d notice this has nothing to do with with being rich. It is about life expectancy by county per federal government data.

@johnerent If you notice, you retard, the middle of Alaska is as rich as Minnesota, according to your map. There is literally nothing there.

Schumpeter: “The capitalist achievement does not typically consist in providing more silk stockings for queens but in bringing them within the reach of factory girls in return for steadily decreasing amounts of effort.”

In 1826, a ream of 500 sheets of paper cost about $5. With average wages near five cents an hour, the time price was 100 hours. Paper was precious. Today, 500 higher-quality sheets sell for $7.99 at Staples. With average wages around $36.86 an hour, the time price is just 13 minutes. humanprogress.org/two-centuries-…

It’s actually fine and good to make a profit building homes for people to live in. If we think developers are making too much money then we should tax their *incomes* instead of making it impossible to make money building the new homes we desperately need.

.@rachelmillward: "You cannot actually solve the housing crisis in the current planning system because it begins and ends with profit. Developer profit is protected in this system. We need to have council housing at scale & that will take a change of govt legislation" 🎯

@daviss Both airlines needed to get bigger to have the economies of scale to compete with the Deltas of the world. More power in negotiating for fuel, airport slots, etc. No guarantee it would have worked out, but that is why the workers at both airlines fought so hard for a merger.

I’m def not a finance person, but hard to imagine taking on Spirits losses would help do anything other than tank both of them? “JetBlue Airways reported a net loss of $319 million in the first quarter of 2026, wider than the $208 million loss it posted in the same period a year earlier” finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks…

One of these days, folks are going to look down from the phones where they bemoan the "lost America" and realize that the real America still exists and isn't lost at all and that those of us who live in the real world are still doing all the things they think are gone.
Dr Taylor Marshall™️@TaylorRMarshall

I'm watching the film “Sandlot” with our kids and just realized that the film’s version of America with baseball, public pools, county fair, block parties, etc is almost extinct.

@daviss To be fair, Spirit would still be around if Elizabeth Warren hadn’t pressured the Biden Admin to block its merger with JetBlue (merger supported by all unions at both airlines). Combined, they could have effectively competed with the big guys. Now both will be dead within a year.

@vincempls I’m going to have to formally count all of all the buildings downtown that served as headquarters at one point of US Bank and its predecessor organizations. It’s a bunch; honestly didn’t know the Soo Line Building was one of them!

#OnThisDay May 1 1914: Construction begins on 1st National Bank in Minneapolis, later serving as headquarters of the Soo Line Railroad. The 19-story Renaissance Revival building was Minnesota’s tallest until 1929. In 2013 it became the city's first commercial-to-residential conversion.

@natehoodstp @andrew_carlson2 I can tell you 100% that Wells Fargo would not have developed it Downtown East campus (5,000 workers) if it weren’t for the Vikings stadium. They were looking for a suburban campus development prior to the new stadium development.

A school district with only 2,000 students would receive over $42 million over the next 28 years thanks to a new data center. The NIMBYs complain about it. Opposition to data centers may be one of the dumbest things in MN politics - and that says a lot.. startribune.com/google-wants-m…
