Dit las ik van de week, en eerlijk gezegd: het zou ons allemaal wakker moeten schudden. We hebben in Europa ruim 185 miljard euro aan ingevroren Russisch tegoed staan. En Brussel schuift nu steeds nadrukkelijker richting een scenario waarin niet alleen de rente, maar het volledige kapitaal wordt gebruikt voor de oorlog in Oekraïne. Maar laten we even nuchter blijven: als Europa besluit om buitenlands staatstegoed simpelweg in te trekken, dan is dat een precedent van wereldformaat. Een stap met gevolgen die zelden hardop worden uitgesproken. Want wie draait op voor de reactie van Rusland? Wie krijgt de rechtszaken, de claims, de represailles? Niet Brussel. Niet de technocraten die dit bedenken. Maar de landen waar dit geld daadwerkelijk geparkeerd staat. Daar zitten enorme risico’s achter, financieel, economisch én geopolitiek. En geloof me: landen als China kijken scherp mee. Als Europa zonder terughoudendheid één grootmacht “onteigent”, dan zullen andere landen zich afvragen wie de volgende is. Het vertrouwen in de euro, in Europese financiële instellingen en in Euroclear komt dan direct onder druk te staan. En ja: dat raakt gewone mensen. Spaargeld. Pensioenen. Rente. Stabiliteit. Dit zijn geen spelletjes, dit zijn fundamenten. Het wrange is dat veel Europese landen wél de politieke boodschap onderschrijven, maar níet de financiële risico’s hoeven dragen. En dan krijg je situaties waarbij Nederland, België en een paar andere landen reële problemen op hun bord krijgen, terwijl de rest vooral applaudisseert voor “Europese solidariteit”. Maar solidariteit zonder risicoverdeling is geen solidariteit. Dat is doorschuiven. Ik zeg niet dat je Rusland moet ontzien. Ik zeg dat je als Europese Unie geen risico’s moet nemen die je niet eerlijk durft uit te leggen aan je eigen bevolking. We hebben in de afgelopen jaren al gezien wat er gebeurt als leiders zonder democratisch debat handelen: COVID-maatregelen die uiteindelijk juridisch wankel bleken. Migratiebeleid dat totaal uit de hand liep. Klimaatagenda’s die miljarden kosten zonder bewezen effectiviteit. Oorlogspolitiek waarbij de Europese burger vooral betaalt, maar zelden inspraak heeft. En steeds met dezelfde boodschap: "Het is voor uw veiligheid, meneer. Voor uw bescherming, mevrouw." Maar bescherming zonder transparantie is gewoon machtspolitiek. Ik ben vóór Europa als samenwerking. Maar níet voor een Europa dat handelt zonder mandaat, zonder kritische controle, zonder realiteitszin. We mogen nooit accepteren dat Europese instellingen boven democratische toetsing komen te staan. Niet bij klimaatbeleid. Niet bij migratie. Niet bij oorlog. En zeker niet bij het onteigenen van honderden miljarden die niet van hen zijn. Als we iets moeten herstellen, dan is het vertrouwen.
