The Week in Politics
Jr Minister Seán Canney remembers the 1979 fuel crisis, which triggered nationwide rationing and queues at the pumps, and 'hopes' a repeat of history isn't on the cards. #RTETWIP repeats at 11pm tonight on @RTEOne

The boyfriend of murdered schoolteacher Aisling Murphy has told US officials at Capitol Hill that he fears for Ireland's Future. Ryan Casey travelled to Washington DC and appeared on a panel alongside Independent TD Ken O' Flynn and Independent TD Carol Nolan. Casey, took to social media to say the following: "First visit to Washington, D.C. was an incredibly productive experience. I had the opportunity to engage with many high-ranking US officials on Capitol Hill and at the US State Department who have genuine interest and concerns about the direction our country is heading. "I strongly highlighted the importance that the next 5-10 years will be in maintaining and preserving Irelands historical homogenous society, which is a defining part of who we are, and how critical it is that we protect and honour it for future generations to come. "This trip truly highlighted the importance of having a close relationship between our two countries, a relationship that is built on mutual respect, shared history, shared values, and a commitment to working together on areas of common interest." @CBSNews Here we go, counter strikes on gulf refineries if he proceeds with the attack. So much for winding down the war BUT he could say the complete opposite in a few hours. All depends on what side of the bed he get out off.

President Trump on Saturday night threatened to "obliterate" Iran's power plants if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened within 48 hours. The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed to most ship traffic by Iran's military forces since the war began. In response, Iran's military renewed threats against the region's infrastructure.

🚨🚨Trump on Truth Social: "If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST! Thank you for your attention to this matter"

Will somebody please explain to me how, with the Strait of Hormuz a no-go-zone for the U.S. Navy, and our warships driven out of the Persian Gulf, we can support a USMC amphibious landing on Kharg Island, 750 miles from the eastern tip of Oman?🧵 Is the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group going to storm into the Persian Gulf, where our Burke-class destroyers won't go? Obviously not. This idea is insane. How about by helo and tilt-rotor? Out of range. What if they stage in Kuwait or Saudi Arabia for helo and Osprey lifts across the Gulf? Russia and China will tell Iran where to aim their drones and missiles while the force is assembling. Maybe a mass paradrop? Straight into an "Alamo" siege. Great idea. Not. What if the Marines just capture some of those "small" islands in the Strait of Hormuz? Qeshm is bigger than Okinawa. Larak is bigger than Iwo Jima. Any idea how many Marines and Soldiers it took to conquer just those 2 islands, at what cost in KIA and WIA? I keep reading absolute MORONS on X telling how some A-10s are "softening up" an area larger than South Vietnam, so that a few thousand Marines can attack and hold . . . what? It's as if space aliens studying only still images had no sense of scale of earth creatures, and thought a mouse could eat an elephant. It boggles my mind.

@DaraghCassidy We vote for parties that offer the best tax cuts. Imagen a party in an election promises no tax cuts or tax band adjustments for its term. Money saved would be allocated as seed Captial to build the following projects.

I love Spain. But in so many ways (service, speed) the country doesn't scream efficiency to me. So you really have to commend it for being so efficient at building good infrastructure. And you also have to wonder why countries like Ireland and the UK have become so poor at it.
Looking for Growth@lfg_uk

Is this acceptable? Since 1990, Spain has built nearly 7,000 miles of motorway. So ... what about the UK? We have built 422 miles of motorway in 35 years. 35 years – 422 miles. Thats only twelve miles every year. Why have we stopped building?

@badmathsnphet @roiste_de @Nick_Delehanty If u have proof, then name & shame them. But u will have to get the costs they are paying for the fill first. Easy to make accusations without proof & prices on the forecourt is not proof.

@_iron_rage_ @Nick_Delehanty Companies work on fixed margins. If product is €1 & margin 10%, that’s €0.10c. If price increases to €1.50, 10% margin is €0.15. Profits go up.

@Nick_Delehanty While it is the case that the government takes a big part of the price of fuel, it is also true that fuel companies are increasing their margin. Two things can be true at the same time. Just check fuel companies share prices...

@Nick_Delehanty They will still up the price at the pumps. How can price jump 2-3 times in one week when the truck replineshes weekly/fortnightly. I see oil prices have dropped now but no change in fuel prices. It goes up within hours and months to come down if it ever does.

@ryano3232_ryan @_Jase_C_ @BarakRavid They have consolidated their power now. US supported Saddam Hussein (remember him) for 8 years in the Iraq/Iran war & got nowhere. Then US turned on Saddam & spent 10+ years stuck in that 💩show of Iraq. US gets involved in Midfle East & ends up a mess.

🚨U.S. to allow Iran to get ~14 billion dollars (!!!) in oil revenue 🚨This is a huge financial concession to Iran by the U.S. 🚨It is the first time U.S. is buying Iranian oil since 1996 🚨It's all happening in the middle of a war against...Iran
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent@SecScottBessent

Iran is the head of the snake for global terrorism, and through President Trump’s Operation Epic Fury, we are winning this critical fight at an even faster pace than anticipated. In response to Iran’s terrorist attacks against global energy infrastructure, the Trump Administration will continue to deploy America’s economic and military might to maximize the flow of energy to the world, strengthen global supply, and seek to ensure market stability. Today, the Department of the Treasury is issuing a narrowly tailored, short-term authorization permitting the sale of Iranian oil currently stranded at sea. At present, sanctioned Iranian oil is being hoarded by China on the cheap. By temporarily unlocking this existing supply for the world, the United States will quickly bring approximately 140 million barrels of oil to global markets, expanding the amount of worldwide energy and helping to relieve the temporary pressures on supply caused by Iran. In essence, we will be using the Iranian barrels against Tehran to keep the price down as we continue Operation Epic Fury. This temporary, short-term authorization is strictly limited to oil that is already in transit and does not allow new purchases or production. Further, Iran will have difficulty accessing any revenue generated and the United States will continue to maintain maximum pressure on Iran and its ability to access the international financial system. So far, the Trump Administration has been working to bring around 440 million additional barrels of oil to the global market, undercutting Iran’s ability to leverage its disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump’s pro-energy agenda has driven U.S. oil and gas production to record levels, strengthening energy security and lowering fuel costs. Any short-term disruption now will ultimately translate into longer-term economic gains for Americans – because there is no prosperity without security.

@BarakRavid @DavidLawler10 @MarcACaputo @axios Before actual military operations end Trump will have changed his mind several times over. If all oil/gas pumping/storage/loading facilities destroyed in the gulf area, it won’t matter a dam if the straights are open. Stopping military operations should be the priority.

Total and complete victory would involve 20,000 or 40,000 troops on the ground in Iran. Until he withdraws all the troops on the ground there is no victory. He can declare victory any time. But until he withdraws all marines, we are still in a war. Let Israel fight it if that’s their ultimate goal. We should be out and done!

Since Day One of Operation Epic Fury, President Trump clearly outlined the U.S. Military’s objectives to end the threat of the Iranian terrorist regime. The President and the Pentagon predicted it would take approximately 4-6 weeks to achieve this mission. Tomorrow marks week 3 - and the U.S. Armed Forces are doing an exceptional job. Day by day, the Iranian Regime is being crippled, and their ability to threaten the United States and our allies is being significantly weakened. As always, President Trump is laser focused on one thing: total and complete VICTORY.

So that house in Meath is now actively being demolished. Interestingly enough however, Damien English, a former TD for Meath, also build a house without planning permission some years ago but he was allowed to keep it. It's not planning permission, it's connection protection.
