Successful people start with two core beliefs: the future can be better than the present, and I have the power to make it so.

Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are. —Coach John Wooden (This advice is more important now than ever before: character > reputation)

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke with courage. April 4—he was assassinated. “I’m not fearing any man.” Youth, this is our moment: to lead boldly, serve selflessly, and build legacies that outlive us. The future is now—and we must rise to shape it together. #LeadTheFutureNow

During my first official visit to Guyana 🇬🇾 since my appointment as @UNESCO Director-General, I had the pleasure of meeting with Hugh Hilton Todd, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Sonia Parag, Minister of Education; Charles S. Ramson, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. The Caribbean is at the forefront of global challenges and opportunities. I am committed to deepening our partnership and working alongside Guyana across UNESCO’s fields of expertise, while supporting SIDS in advancing climate resilience and sustainable development. Together, we will ensure the region’s voice continues to help shape UNESCO’s future. #ForThePeople

My advice to fellow young people: don’t wait to be perfect. Show up, present, and use your voice. Nobody cares what’s in your pocket or your challenges -vision matters. I’ve walked into big rooms with nothing but courage. Keep going, kind, and keep showing up.#LeadTheFutureNow

AmCham, in partnership with the Office of the Special Envoy on Technology and @InvestKenya_ , hosted a high-level roundtable on AI & Emerging Technologies: Investing Across the Full Stack on the sidelines of #KIICO2026. Co-chaired by Ambassador Philip Thigo, MBS.@pthigo , MBS, Special Envoy on Technology, and Michael Murungi, AmCham Digital Economy Taskforce Chair & Government Affairs & Public Policy Lead Eastern Africa, Google, the session convened senior public and private sector leaders to explore investment opportunities across the full AI value chain from infrastructure and compute to talent, data, and applications. Key highlights from the discussion: 1. Infrastructure & Compute Strong investor interest exists in scaling data centres and cloud regions in Kenya, anchored on reliable renewable energy, competitive pricing, targeted tax incentives, and clear frameworks for land, licensing, and grid access. Kenya is increasingly positioned as a regional compute hub for East and Central Africa, with investment commitments closely tied to effective public-private risk-sharing. 2. Talent & Research Participants expressed a willingness to expand AI training programs, certifications, and research labs, and expressed interest in university partnerships to co-develop industry-aligned curricula. Key asks included streamlined visa and work permit processes for global researchers, stronger R&D incentives, and centres of excellence in applied AI across fintech, healthcare, and agriculture. 3. Governance, Policy & Sovereignty Participants agreed that regulation itself is not a barrier to investment; rather, it is uncertainty, fragmentation, and misalignment with global frameworks that constrain capital flows. There was strong consensus on the need for a predictable, innovation-enabling regulatory environment, one that balances sovereignty with openness, supports cross-border data flows, and positions Kenya as a globally aligned leader in AI governance. 4. Data, Models & Applications Significant interest in building localized AI models in collaboration with global technology players, creating new economic value across sectors, and strengthening Kenya's position in the global digital economy. AmCham member companies were strongly represented at the roundtable, reflecting the depth of private sector commitment to shaping Kenya's AI ecosystem. Participating organizations included Google, Meta, Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, Tala, Bower Group Asia, and Bowmans, a broad cross-section of global technology leaders and advisory firms actively investing in Kenya's digital economy and AI landscape. The roundtable reaffirmed Kenya's strong positioning as an AI investment destination. The path forward requires coordinated action across policy, investment, and skills to ensure that AI delivers inclusive, sustainable growth.
