With the wounds of Afghanistan still fresh, and D-Day upon us again, I want to highlight something rare in today’s leadership culture: Accountability.
June 5th, 1944. On the eve of the largest amphibious invasion in history, General Eisenhower sat alone, chain smoking cigarettes, burdened by the weight of the free world. The weather was erratic. The risks were monumental. Failure meant catastrophe. Not just for the operation, but for the cause of liberty itself.
And yet, in that moment, he didn’t shift blame or hedge bets. He wrote a letter. A short one. Just a few sentences.
In it, he took full responsibility, before the battle even began. He misdated it, likely from the stress. But the message was clear:
If this fails, blame me. Not the troops. Not the conditions. Me.
That’s what the mantle of command truly looks like.
Not just basking in success, but bearing the full weight of failure too.
As we honor D-Day this year, remember that moment.
Because accountability like that isn’t just historical, it’s aspirational.
And we need more of it.
