It was a blessing to preach for my brother on the Lord’s Day at Faith BC, Kannapolis, NC. We also had the opportunity to celebrate James’ 80th Birthday! We always love spending time with James and Nancy, especially this weekend! @JpauleyJames

I love playing ball with these guys! Three Wendell Police officers that are members of our church asked me to be a part of the community team. Nothing better than being immersed in the community! They named us the Disciples!

Please pray for Henry! Pastor & Mrs. Jeremy Barker - Nigeria. Henry's cancer is very aggressive and spreading too rapidly for us to wait for an opening at a proton radiation center. He will begin the photon treatment tomorrow morning at 9:45EST at Duke in Durham.

Fifteen years ago today I flew from Boston, MA, leaving Candace and two-year-old Joey to check out a church I had never heard of or sent a resume to in Wilson, NC. I don’t have anything novel to share, but here are some thoughts over fifteen years as I start my sixteenth year. They are geared to me in 2011, and if there is anyone else in the same category looking for that next step. 1. It is all about Jesus. It is not about the under shepherd but the Chief Shepherd. Make much about the Lord. If you honor the Lord and magnify Him, then His presence is sensed and His glory is manifest. It is His Church. Prayer should be real and worship heartfelt. He is in the midst. People do not stay for you; they will stay if they meet Jesus! “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:2) “And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.” (Colossians 1:18) 2. Preach the Word. Sequential, exponential, verse by verse preaching and teaching is safest and clearest as it models natural Bible study and opens the mind of God, but whether or not it is a verse by verse message, it should be biblical. I was warned in seminary never to be passive aggressive in the pulpit. Preach what the Word says and let people apply it to their lives. Confront people directly and confidentially, but allow the Spirit to do His work specifically. The pulpit is not a bully space. You give account for every word. “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. (2 Timothy 4:2) “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17) 3. Pray for the church. I have made it a goal every week to pray for each member by name. It was a bit easier when we first started, but now it certainly connects my heart and mind to the spiritual needs and growth of others. “We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers.” (1 Thessalonians 1:2) Pastors are to “give themselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the Word (Acts 6:4)” 4. Don’t sweat the small stuff. There may be confusion at times or people rightly or unjustly upset. I learned I cannot meet everyone’s expectation and trust. The harshest I have ever been treated have been by people who called themselves Christian and once were close. Familiarity breeds contempt and a prophet has no honour in his own country. If someone is right, admit it. If they are wrong, then give it to the Lord and move on. I have cried in three interactions with members and none of them have ever apologized but felt they were right. I have been misled, misunderstood, and misrepresented. That is okay. Jesus was perfect and His brothers called Him crazy, one disciple betrayed Him, one denied Him three times, and all but one left Him. Know the difference between a Judas and a Peter. Release one, restore the other. I think this is why most pastors leave. It hurts and sometimes you wonder if it is all worth it. Realize it is hard everywhere doing anything and no place is perfect. Count your blessings, not your bruises. Even Jesus told us to shake the dust off our feet at times. Just make sure you are taking orders from and pleasing Him, not them. “Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven.” (Matthew 5:11-12) “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not..” (Galatians 6:9)

“Special” doesn’t even begin to describe doubling on big bucks with my son! Eli nailed this massive, one-of-a-kind deer, and 15 minutes later I shot mine from the same stand! Grateful for these moments with my boys.
