Crowd energy affects fights way more than people think. When a hometown fighter lands any type of shot, the arena explodes. When he gets hit, the crowd goes silent. Over three rounds, that reaction builds a sense of momentum inside the arena that you can only feel if you are there. Everybody who has been to a live event knows exactly what I am talking about. Remember, the judges are scoring live, cageside, hearing every roar when the local fighter connects. After enough exchanges, that noise can subtly frame who looks like they’re winning the round. I remember being in the crowd live for UFC Sydney in January 2026 and all the Aussie fighters got the hometown cheers, which resulted in their fighters getting the rub of the judges, for example Kaan Ofli won a fight against Yi Zha which went viral online as most people called it a robbery. In the main event Alexander Volkanovski beat Diego Lopes 5-0 on some judges' scorecard, when in reality, watching live, the fight seemed much closer. This happens so often in MMA. It’s not rigging per say, but crowd dynamics can absolutely influence how close rounds get scored, and sometimes ultimately who wins the fight.
