.400 is a huge deal and a damn near impossibility in the modern game because of the proliferation of strikeouts. I wish there were higher batting averages. I love watching pure hitters. The game has evolved away from that. But what the presence of analytics has taken from the game I’d argue is outweighed by what it has imbued. The quality of players is just so much better now. It’s bigger, it’s faster, it’s just more physically impressive. That doesn’t make it better, per se, just different, which is why those stuck in the past make me sad: they’re missing out on athletic greatness because of an adherence to something that was different. The fundamental elements of baseball remain, and they’re what people fall in love with. It’s a brilliantly conceived sport — constantly filled with decision-making situations and requiring constant thought — that also features fierce competition. That never went away. You can ignore the new numbers. Or you can embrace them. But letting them get in the way of your enjoyment of the game is a cop-out. The game is the game. The numbers are a tentacle, not the heart.
