@Mpolymer Ahmadinejad was already a lightning rod when he was president, not only among the vast popular opposition to him but also from within the establishment elite. He was a Basiji, not a cleric, the only president installed with such a credential. Red flags all around.

More details emerge, wild story, mind blowing actually ….. lots of thoughts on this, including on tradecraft (yikes), but fundamentally, sometimes it’s best not to recruit those even who appear susceptible to recruitment. Suitability is cornerstone of HUMINT. Was he really - given his background - a legit future leader? (Hint-I’d think most Iran experts say No). @Alain_Deckers @hissgoescobra @BrettErickson28 @TheTeamHousePod You are right Alain--infrastructure to sustain a north-south Caspian overwater route for oil & gas doesn't exist yet. But where there is a will, there's a way.

It can facilitate trade (weapons, food, etc.), but oil requires dedicated infrastructure (terminals, pipelines, etc.). I've found no evidence that exists on Iran's Caspian coast. But I may have missed it.
