Today, families and friends across Canada gather to celebrate the Persian New Year — to welcome rebirth and the importance of ushering in light that triumphs over darkness.    In this time of new conflicts and global uncertainty, this celebration of renewal and optimism is especially meaningful.    To the Iranian-Canadian community and all those celebrating, happy Nowruz.

The shots fired toward the United States Consulate in Toronto early this morning are a reprehensible act of violence and attempt at intimidation. I am relieved that no one was injured.   The RCMP and federal agencies will devote all needed resources to support the Toronto Police Service in their investigation, and to ensure that the perpetrators of these violent acts are identified and brought to the full weight of justice.    This weekend, our government’s Incident Response Group reviewed potential changes to the threat landscape in Canada and underlined the importance of continued vigilance to enhance domestic security.    Canada’s new government has taken bold action to strengthen law enforcement and the Criminal Code. We will use every tool available to ensure the safety and security of our communities.

Public safety remains a top priority for our community on the North shore. This morning, I welcomed Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree and MP Ron McKinnon for an important conversation with leaders from the Iranian-Canadian community. At a time when many in the community are experiencing fear and uncertainty, it was important to create space for open and respectful dialogue about public safety and well-being. Thank you to all who joined us, shared their perspectives, and helped ensure the voices of Iranian-Canadians are heard. Conversations like these are essential to building safer, stronger and more inclusive communities.

My statement on Iran-related hostilities in the Middle East:

Four years of childhood lived in fear. Russia started this war. Russia must end it. #StandWithUkraine

Today, I arranged for Canada's Parliament to be lit blue and yellow to mark 4 years since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Canada is unwavering in our support for Ukraine. We must stand with the people of Ukraine until they win. Supporting Ukraine is not only the right thing to do, but it is the right thing for Canada - If Russia wins, it will not stop at Ukraine, that is why Ukraine’s victory is vital to Canada’s security. Slava Ukraini!

Putin thought he could take Ukraine in three days. Four years later, Ukraine stands — strong, sovereign, and unbroken. Ukrainians have shown the world what courage, resilience, and unity look like. Canada stands with Ukraine — for as long as it takes. Slava Ukraini! 🇺🇦

I am devastated by the innocent lives lost and the many others injured following yesterday’s shooting at a school in Tumbler Ridge. This is an unspeakable tragedy for a close-knit community. My thoughts and prayers are with the students, staff, families, and friends of those affected during this incredibly difficult time.
