Very curious to me that weird al planted his flag as America's only musical parody artist over 40 years ago and has reigned undisputed ever since I can't think of a reason a country should have room for exactly one popular parody artist, but it seems to be the case

@HeerJeet I have only been through a few of the boxes. There are over 200, as I recall, plus many paintings, drawings, clippings, etc., some of which, according to the finding aid, they had to remove for obscenity.

@joncgoodwin Very unlikely, since letter is responding to something by Kenner that was clearly in 1974 (with topical allusion to gas prices & other 1974 happenings). Are you doing research into GD's papers at HRC?

Here's a mystery. The Vanity Fair article has Cormac McCarthy running off to Mexico in 1977 with a teenage girl. But in a 1974 letter to Hugh Kenner, Guy Davenport mentions that McCarthy had just run off to Mexico with a teenage girl. Did McCarthy do this more than once? Did Vanity Fair get the date wrong?

Re: the Cormac McCarthy story. In 1973 and 1974, McCarthy was editing Guy Davenport's first story collection, Tatlin!, making many severe strictures. Then, McCarthy disappeared. In a 1974 letter to Hugh Kenner, Davenport explained what happened.

@HeerJeet I have read his comments in Davenport's papers in the HRC; they are hardly severe. A comical overreaction on Davenport's part.
