OK, everyone. I think it’s time I told my Boris Johnson story. It’s a story about the time as foreign secretary where Johnson committed a straightforward resigning offence, got caught out, then got away with it. Thread.

Treason. The President of the United States accuses a reporter of treason because the reporter doesn’t blindly praise his polices. And no one bats an eye. As a reminder, the penalty for treason in the United States is death, or imprisonment for a minimum of 5 years. Imagine Obama accusing Fox News of treason. Imagine the reaction on either side if any politician made a similar statement prior to 2015. Not to mention, the sheer unchecked egotism to declare “I had a total military victory.” Not, “our courageous troops.” Nope. “I” We are all so numb to this insanity.
Aaron Rupar@atrupar

Trump to NYT's David Sanger: "I had a total military victory. But the fake news, guys like you, write incorrectly. You're a fake guy. We had a total military victory. I actually think it's sort of treasonous what you write. You should be ashamed of yourself. I actually think it's treason."

As preposterous as arresting people for calling for death to the Russian army. The IDF is not a person and this is not a direct incitement to violence. This slogan may well offend people - that should not be a criminal offence.

Nigel Farage, April 29: “This money was given to me so that I would be safe and secure for the rest of my life”. Nigel Farage, May 14: “Frankly, it was given to me as a reward for campaigning against Brexit for 27 years.” Which is it?

Reform only came short in this constituency by 5400 votes in 2024 and will throw everything at the by-election. This is extraordinarily risky for Burnham, even assuming NEC lets him stand. There were many better options for him and suggests no-one else was prepared to make way

For decades, Westminster has overseen the managed decline of towns like mine. We have talked big, then acted small, stuck in a politics of incrementalism that cannot meet the moment. We have lost the trust of those our party was built to serve. It is my unwavering belief that nothing short of urgent, radical, courageous reform will make a difference. That must start with a change in leadership. Today, I am putting the people I represent and the country I love first and will be resigning as MP for Makerfield. I am standing aside so that Andy Burnham can return to his home, fight to re-enter Parliament, and if elected, drive the change our country is crying out for. This has not been an easy decision. This is my family’s home, where only a few weeks ago, doctors and nurses at Wigan Infirmary saved our newborn son’s life. But we all must make choices and in recent days I found myself with a difficult one: defend the status quo or step forward and act. I have made my choice. I am in politics because politics is how you change lives for the better. My party has one last chance to do that: deliver for the people and places I represent, drive economic growth, secure our borders, reform our state and politics, and change a status quo that is not working. That is the fight. I believe Andy is the one to lead it.

Nigel Farage tells The Sun the £5m he got from the crypto billionaire was a ‘reward for campaigning for Brexit for 27 years’ On May 5, Mr Farage said the money was ‘the only way I can protect myself for the rest of my life’ as he was the ‘most attacked, physically, politician of modern times’

This is just a robbery. The president sues his own government and then pressures them to settle. He wants them to give him billions… of our money. This might be the worst case of corruption ever. A president directly robbing the citizens he’s supposed to serve and protect.

He gets a ballroom. An Arch. A new reflecting pool. 10 billion directly into his pocket from taxpayers. Billions from special interests seeking favors and pardons. What has America gotten? Tariffs, a new war, higher gas prices, inflation. Truly a golden age.

Imperialism aside, the Trump administration considers Venezuelans who come here to be illegals but a Venezuelans in Venezuela to be Americans. Got it.

I appreciate the intense interest in my column. For skeptics, why not agree on Red Cross and lawyer visits for the 9,000 Palestinian "security" prisoners? If you think these abuse allegations are false, such monitoring visits would be protective. So why not?
Nicholas Kristof@NickKristof

This is a hard article to read, but I hope you'll do so. I've spent some time reporting on widespread rape and other sexual violence of Palestinian male and female prisoners by Israeli authorities, and the article is now published. The assault victims were warned not to give speak of what they endured -- they were sometimes told they would be killed or raped if they gave interviews -- but they found the courage to do so. One man described being raped three times in a single day in Israeli prison, the third time after he tried to protest. A young woman said the guards would come in at the beginning of each shift and strip her naked and abuse her. Another reported that she was shown photos of herself being raped and warned they would be released unless she cooperated with Israeli intelligence. Even three children who had been detained told me they had been sexually abused. Look, whatever our position on the Middle East, we should be able to agree on being anti-rape. Sexual assaults were horrific when Israeli women were targeted on Oct. 7, and they're equally horrific when Israeli authorities use them against Palestinians day after day after day. We should be able to find common ground in opposing rape. Here's a gift link to the article: nytimes.com/2026/05/11/opi…
