In the Ayinde case, AI use by the barrister was suspected (generative tools for research, unverified) but not confirmed or named specifically. In Al-Haroun, the claimant admitted generating the 18+ fake citations himself via publicly available generative AI tools (plus online sources), which his solicitor relied on without checks. The judgment didn't name a specific product like ChatGPT or Copilot. Lawyers must verify everything independently regardless.

An absolutely excruciating moment at the Georgia Supreme Court this week. Justice Peterson pressed state attorney Deborah Leslie over her citations to cases that apparently don’t exist.

In June 2025 the UK High Court ruled on two cases (Ayinde v Haringey LBC and Al-Haroun v Qatar National Bank) where lawyers submitted written arguments citing dozens of non-existent cases—many AI-generated "hallucinations." The court issued strong warnings of contempt, wasted costs orders, regulator referrals and even potential criminal charges for misleading the court. Lawyers were told to verify everything themselves.
