For someone that’s known to overreact, a lot of you on here are doomposting far too much regarding the Leafs.

@KwnStorm No I believe some have made things up during this process to drive certain narratives but everyone is being told different things but soon enough we will find out what is true.

@jonnyherrera I don't think it's reporters making things up, but they're reporting what they're told but what they're being told is intentionally wrong info to see where/who is providing the leaks.

@mcclxskey Kyper also mentioned there is a lot of deception going on here. An said he’s there was also a side that Gillis has already been hired but being kept quiet. So only time will tell on what happens here

According to Nick Kypreos, he's heard (but not confirmed) that Mike Gillis is OUT and believes John Chayka is the front runner for the Leafs GM job. Wild. I still think Mike Gillis has been in place as the next team president for weeks and John Chayka's my top choice for GM among the reported finalists, followed closely by Scott White. Chayka would undoubtedly have to address his departure from Arizona - which, if he's hired, shouldn't be a problem. He'll have already overcome that with relative ease to have been successful in the interview. I still believe Mats Sundin's going to be involved.

Re: John Chayka - this isn't talked about enough. 2 sides to every story. John Chayka took the high road (like a professional) while Meruelo ran his name through the mud after he left the team. From what I've read, Meruelo refused to grant Devils ownership permission to talk to Chayka about an elevated role with their club. Chayka talked Meruelo into giving him permission and was ultimately offered an opportunity (ie. President), and Meruelo was beyond pissed. He claims Chayka told him he was merely having a friendly cup of coffee and was blindsided by the outcome. I mean... regardless of how Chayka truly pitched this, you've gotta be some kind of stupid to miss the plot here and feel "blindsided". On one hand, Chayka was under contract - a fresh contract, at that. He was a promising young leader and Meruelo wanted to keep him. On the other hand, the Coyotes were objectively a stepping stone organization and Meruelo was holding a young man back from a promising and arguably once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to elevate his career. I believe Meruelo had every right to be upset/disappointed, but was wrong for trying to hold John Chayka back from a chance like this. Disputes happen in business. If you're mad, you tell Chayka to fuck off, you let him go, you keep it cordial in the media and you move on. Instead, he opted for a power play and held Chayka hostage to deliberately cost him the opportunity, which Chayka rejected, and quit. Ultimately, it cost Meruelo his GM + bad publicity, and it cost Chayka his opportunity + bad publicity as well. It doesn't bode well for Meruelo that just a few years later, the team would be playing in Mullett Arena and ultimately forced to sell the team and relocate to Utah. Think about it - where would John Chayka have been in 3 years had he stayed in Arizona? He'd be running a team out of a janitor's closet in a college arena. Could have been president of the Devils. It's a joke, and it's complete bullshit that this context gets missed when people remember John Chayka's tenure in Arizona. I'd likely have done all the same things John Chayka did. Can't say the same for Alex Meruelo.

@mcclxskey 100% you need to have them in place by May 5th it would be very top of mind for leafs management. Kyper also mentioned that some of the 4 finalist (he did not name who) may have already been told they have not been selected for the role already. So we will see what happens

I don't think it's an end-all be-all, but I'm sure they'd like new leadership to represent the team at the draft lottery on May 5th if they can help it. Haven't caught up on Kyper and Bourne yet today - wonder if JB was citing EF's report that it could be done in ~24-48 hours, which he later walked back.

@mcclxskey We might know who it is within the next 24 hours, as per Justin Bourne with a press conference on Monday ….. should be interesting few days here

Sticking to my guns. I believe Mike Gillis has been hired and it’s been done for a while. Will be a great look for new leadership that they’ve been able to keep it a secret of this magnitude under wraps in Toronto. Is he comfortable working in tandem with John Chayka, or Scott White, or whoever they hire as general manager? Absolutely, because he’s been involved in the process. Would explain why the GM names didn’t emerge until later in the process. Explains why Sundin was brought in, likely for a VP role, and the timing. Gillis talk goes dark, so does Sundin. Friedman says there’s some misdirection here because they didn’t like what’s gotten out. Tracks. Gillis is hellbent on sports science. The Gary Roberts conversation tracks as well. We’ll see where that goes. Mike Gillis has big ideas that justify his oversight as Team President beyond day-to-day management of the team. This is the Toronto Maple Leafs. They are not about to hand the keys to a first-time general manager. They are not about to hold an underwhelming press conference. The announcement of the new front office will be one for the ages. Think back to Lieweke-Shanahan-Babcock. It will undo everything Keith Pelley said previously (including not hiring a new president). It will inspire hope in the fan base. Toronto’s about to turn the narrative surrounding this team completely upside down. It’s always darkest before the dawn, and the dawn of a new era is coming. It will be up to Gillis & Co. to live up to the hype. God, I’m going to look like such an idiot if I’m wrong. “Trust your gut”, they said. We’ll see.

The slack us leafs fans got when stories came out around Marner getting death threats. Our fan base was called toxic and that we put too much pressure on players here but it happens in Montreal with Kirby Dach and it’s labeled as “small minority “ of the fan base. Interesting

@FirstUp1050 @TSN_Sports Take note people, Pronger was saying this in relation to the GM role. From what I heard he was interviewed for a hockey operations role not a GM.

“There were rumours that I interviewed for the GM job, I did not interview for that role” Hockey Hall of Famer Chris Pronger shared some breaking news this morning on #FirstUp about if he interviewed for the #LeafsForever GM job and if he was interested in the role. 👀

I'm as anti-every other team other than the Leafs as they come, literally want all of the other franchises to fold once the Leafs season is over, but if you're pissing your pants over what Steve Dangle is doing than you probably need to rethink your priorities in life.

🎙️: @TNTSportsAR - @marcosbonocore
