The NHL Alumni Association is heartbroken to learn that Troy Murray has passed away at the age of 63.  Growing up in St. Albert, Alberta, Troy played two seasons of junior hockey with his hometown Saints, before being selected by the Chicago Black Hawks in the third round of the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. Troy played two seasons of college hockey with the University of North Dakota before making his NHL debut with the Chicago on April 4, 1982.  Troy scored his first NHL goal at the beginning of the very next season, on October 16, 1982, and in just his fourth full season in 1985-86, Troy earned the Frank J. Selke as the league’s top defensive forward. Troy played 688 of his 915 regular-season games with Chicago, later playing with Winnipeg, Ottawa, and Pittsburgh. Troy joined the Colorado Avalanche ahead of the 1995-96 season and would hoist the Stanley Cup with Colorado on June 10, 1996. Troy returned to Chicago in 1998, this time in the broadcast booth, and would be in the radio booth for all three of Chicago’s Stanley Cup victories in 2010, 2013, and 2015. Only four months after announcing his cancer diagnosis in August of 2021, Troy was back in the booth calling games in December.  A truly kind and gentle man whose warm smile was always a welcome presence. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.  We send our heartfelt condolences to Troy’s family, friends, and former teammates during this incredibly difficult time.
