For all its faults, Twitter has been great for me. People send me money when they like my jokes (why?) and no one racially abuses or tries to have sex with me (I know why).

@garrethhayes @IanDunt @jessicaelgot @AdamWagner1 You had to pick Gmail rather than Hotmail or whatever. It's the same. Once you've picked Gmail you can be myusername@gmail.com. Once you pick say mastodon.org.uk you can be myusername@mastodon.org.uk

@IanDunt @jessicaelgot @AdamWagner1 It's the same as email. There are multiple servers (e.g. gmail) and it doesn't matter which you choose as they can all see each other.

@IanDunt Change can happen quickly - depends how bad Musk makes this hellsite. Having an account setup over there as a fallback seem logical to me.

This is all very sensible and applies equally to the UK.

@elonmusk has inspired me to give @joinmastodon another look. I'm @jonquark@mastodon.org.uk over there (but at least for now I plan to continue doom scrolling over here too).
