@moorehn It's very sour, and without redeeming qualities. Allegedly very healthy, but that's no reason to drink beer.

@jontapson that sounds like the unfortunate voice of experience. What does sorghum beer taste like?

@poppy_haze @AndrewHilaryUS In the, ah, culture I grew up in, the 3.5" ones were called "stiffy discs" (which actually makes sense) - "stiffies" for short. Which led to some misunderstandings when folks traveled more widely

@AndrewHilaryUS i remember when we moved to the 3.5" ones, us kids were like, "why do we still call these floppy discs" and then the teacher said the same magnetic film was inside so we all just shrugged and kept calling them floppies rather than "diskettes"

For those too young to have ever used one, floppy disks were not as floppy as you’d suspect.

@Oom_Rugby A feature of the game is that the laws get changed to make it more entertaining; so the team that is playing entertaining rugby (always used to be the ABs) has an advantage, because the laws change towards their style of play.

@its_bvisness Looks like that comes from Savitch, a major CS talent. I think I learned Pascal from him at UCSD. He was a great educator. Don't be so dismissive, he knew what he was doing.

Glad to see that university CS education is still deeply confused about the most basic things (this picture is real and comes directly from a former robotics student of mine)

@bryan_johnson Important to know that you basically can't overdose someone with Narcan. Keep administering it until you get a response, or run out.

3/ What to do in suspected fentanyl/opioid overdose: If other people are present, have someone call for help as you administer Nalcan spray. If not, administer the first dose and then call for help immediately. 1. Lay them on their back, tilt head, support the neck. Do not test-spray. 2. Insert and press. Put the nozzle in one nostril until your fingers touch the nose. Press the plunger once to give the full dose. Each device = single dose. 3. Start rescue breathing if they’re not breathing. 4. Wait 2–3 min. If no response, repeat with a new device in the other nostril. Keep repeating every 2–3 mins until help arrives. 5. If they wake up: put them in a recovery position. Watch for relapse (naloxone can wear off). Stay until emergency service arrives. Withdrawal (nausea, sweating, agitation) is common.

Fentanyl is the #1 killer among adults aged 18-44. These deaths may be preventable with the right nasal spray on hand. This is how to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community. 🧵

I have no idea if he is or isn't, but if he isn't then falling ass-backwards into this is one of the great screwups of all time. There is objective truth and political truth. The latter is just as good as the former if you allow it to settle. Even more so.

@TrungTPhan A long, long time goes by, and then he awakens. People dressed in outlandish clothes are staring reverently down at him. 'Where am I? What year is it?' he asks. They look sheepish. 'Well' they say. 'It's the year 2999, and we found out you know Cobol...'

@TrungTPhan Even the "How old is Cobol" jokes are old now. 26 years ago: "A coder is working desperately to make some legacy bank code Y2K-compliant. With 24 hours to go to the year 2000, he realizes it's not going to work. He decides to kill himself and cryo-freeze his body...

📜 History Corner I just stumbled upon a fascinating letter written by Herbert J. Taylor back in July 1896, during the uMvukela waMaNdebele (Ndebele Uprising). Incredible to read a firsthand account from that era

One of the founders of NASA JPL was a Chinese engineer named Tsien Hsue-shen. He was a brilliant man and deported in 1955 during a red scare despite a complete lack of evidence just because he was Chinese.

Vance is so good: "The American Space Program, the first program to put a human being on the moon, was built by American citizens. This idea that American citizens don't have the talent to do great things, that you have to import a foreign class of servants, I just reject that."

@sentientist I read a longitudinal study years ago about how much weight gain was attributable to...literally...holiday indulgence. It was hard to believe, but the data were there. It surprised me how much the holiday weight was affecting total weight gain!
