Given the likelihood of the eventuality, surely this would be in the territory of never missing an opportunity to miss an opportunity. The self-preservatory thing to do was to have changed leader already, if they fail to do it in the presumed May outcome, what are they doing?
Times Radio@TimesRadio

“Is it possible that after May…none of them are ready to go?” “Completely.” It’s almost more likely than not that come the local elections, not one of the potential challengers to Starmer will be ready, says @Dannythefink. 🗳️ How To Win An Election 🎧 pod.fo/e/3b205b

But you would imagine Rayner might have a better sense of where Labour Party members sit. Not sure anyone “deserves” to be PM, but we do need a new one.

If you were in doubt re: the Times’ leanings: “Ms Rayner is seeking not only a comeback but Sir Keir’s crown. Whatever the prime minister’s limitations, she does not deserve to inherit it. Class war and spendthrift social engineering have had their day.” thetimes.com/comment/the-ti…

We’re discussing Estonia this week in @warstudies Cyber Diplomacy class, an influential EU member state in the cyber diplomacy agenda. Here the EU is going through the motions of “imposing cost” on cyber actors, more to uphold a principle than in expectation of behaviour change.

Cyber-attacks against EU member states and partners: @EUCouncil lists 2⃣ individuals & 3⃣ companies involved in malicious cyber activities. The EU will continue to cooperate with intl partners to promote an open, free, stable & secure cyberspace More 👇 link.europa.eu/C9v4cN

@Stsantek I think because, without more elaboration, it could be interpreted as an approach to the welfare state that is more right-wing than you’d expect from a left-leaning outlet. But I’d agree it’s actually consistent with some (clearly not all) views within the Labour Party.

We discussed this thoughtful, balanced piece today in our @warstudies Cyber Diplomacy class. The new direction in US cyber diplomacy is consequential, but how will other states respond to it, & how will those responses collectively shape the future of cyber diplomacy?
Carnegie Europe@Carnegie_Europe

The United States' retreat from UN cyber governance makes engagement more selective and transactional. The EU must step up in multilateral fora and deepen cyber coalitions with allies & partners, say @patrykpawlak & @C_Painter. Four possible scenarios: carnegieendowment.org/europe/researc…

A clear strategic choice for the left-of-Labour parties: position as Nato-exiters or as Pedro Sanchez-style autonomy maximisers. The decision would reflect, inter alia, how broad a coalition of voters they think they can assemble. For the Greens, the big tent seems more prudent.
Transition Security Project@TransitionSec

Our co-director @KhemRogaly spoke to the @NewStatesman about Zack Polanski’s anti-war politics. Polanski is right to oppose the illegal war on Iran and to highlight the divergence between US strategy and the interests of British people.

This line jumped out at me too. The piece is well worth reading. Though arguably there are ways of avoiding this zero sum answer, whether incrementally (more tax/borrowing), or as part of a wider transformative approach that a Labour government could take.

‘there is currently no route to higher defence spending – which is inevitable unless the nation is content to continue on a path towards greater insecurity and irrelevance – without major cuts elsewhere in the public spending stack’

@fletchersimon If A attacks B, then B attacks C, it is defensive for C to help A destroy B’s ability to attack C. Even if B wouldn’t be doing it if it hadn’t been attacked by A. I think it is materially different from joining offensive ops. Public opinion might not recognise that, of course.

Cyber / submarine warfare analogies are about to make a major comeback. I continue to beg folks to understand and discuss the domain in its own native terms, not merely slapping a new veneer on old theories.

However disobliging the comments are, about Ed Miliband specifically, they’re obviously a mantle of honour in any coming leadership succession battle. But that’s not the point.

The article’s most eyebrow-raising aspect, for me, was the degree of candid, quite political criticism it elicited from serving, notionally politically-independent officials. Some of which, I suspect, is contextually attributable. Govt should be rightly angry about that.

In fairness, the piece is more nuanced: it wasn’t CDS freelancing but clearly in line with wishes of SoS Defence and PM. Did it have collective NSC approval? Perhaps not, but wasn’t necessary.
James Schneider@schneiderhome

According to Tim Shipman’s source Air Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, the chief of the UK defence staff, helped “the US shape their request” to use UK bases to bomb Iran. Our military shouldn’t be helping a foreign power get something it wants out of our government.
