CPJ Report: 330 Journalists Imprisoned Worldwide in 2025
According to the CPJ report:
✴️ Pressure on press freedom continues globally, with the number of imprisoned journalists remaining high.
✴️ International law and fair trial standards are being seriously violated.
✴️ Different political regimes respond to critical and independent journalism with similar methods of repression.
✴️ One in five imprisoned journalists reports being subjected to torture or physical abuse.
✴️ Prisons are being used systematically as tools to silence freedom of expression.
✴️ 61 percent of jailed journalists are detained under charges broadly classified as “acts against the state.”
✴️ Journalists are frequently accused of terrorism-related offenses or receiving funds from foreign states.
✴️ Political reporting leads to imprisonment more often than coverage of human rights, corruption, or war.
✴️ In countries such as Turkey, China, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Myanmar, opposition voices and journalism related to opposition are treated as systematic threats that must be silenced.
